  • Finishing up Blowback S5 I’m really struck by how borderline criminally bad the common education is on what the Khmer Rouge ideology was actually based in and how the motives for the genocide was a sort of ethnic renaissance combining clearing foreign influence from the Khmer people with revolutionary ideals grabbed from various places, with the latter part being vague due to not progressing out of the “clearing” stage, so to speak.

Also how underexplained the simmering nationalist resentments between Cambodia and Vietnam are, as well as the dynamic between the communist movements of each fueling the conflict. And I don’t mean criminal just because the popularly propagated view is anticommunist, but obscuring how historical events and tendencies developed towards genocide should be criminal within any publicly admissible worldview.

But it is of course most convenient to frame it all as leftist infighting and natural d*generation of revolutions.

  • It literally doesn’t even seem like it would be a challenge to implement a basic system to handle this, there’s a lot of different people/organizations who would be interested in antique valuables and who might even send you out on quests to retrieve them given that it’s already supposed to be one of your main occupations and sources of income, and its natural player behavior to automatically go to shops to exchange trash loot for fungible currency.

Just have 1-2 diegetic pach*nko prize exchanges per significant settlement where you can put in all those piles of antique gold coins and crappy armor and get real money for it.
