This seems really cool, but I can’t tell how different it is from Beyond All Reason.

Zero-K uses the spring engine as well, and the two are pretty different in actual gameplay.

The supply of good FOSS games is very scarce, if you want a quality that does not seem from the 90s. Almost all of the best ones contain components that are not 100% FOSS, yes or yes. Even had to accept F-Droid, with the Gloomie Dungeons mobile game series, a First Person RPG (a little bit like the old DOOM, but better graphics), which is also not entirely FOSS. Also The Dark Mod, which I have already presented here, is not 100% FOSS, if analyzed in depth, but instead it offers almost a quality comparable to current commercial games. I think this is inevitable given the enormous work involved in creating a good game and multiple components involved, not all of them are available as OSS in a certain quality needed. At least if you want something better than the sidescrollers, topdowns and pixel graphics, which abound like FOSS games.

It is in permanent developement and improvementwith a very active community. Originally it was a mod for DOOM III, recreated by fans of the Thief series, from where the idea was taken, but later they have created their own engine and now it is standalone. It has even graphically surpassed the original Thief game and with already more than 130 missions created by the community, constantly adding new ones, it is certainly a game for years and certainly one of the best and most complete OSS games that I know.

It is possible that the first version was made fast, but currently there is a considerable amount of work invested, as I believe, much more than in any other OpenSource game. You can create your own missions with the editor that is optionally downloadable, although creating a good mission is quite complex and requires a work of many weeks or months.
