Using Discourse as a social media platform

I proposed an investment up to 200,000 € to accomplish this earlier, but there were no takers. Actually, @erlend_sh made a proposal on the behalf of the Discourse team, which was accepted by the NGI Zero consortium. Then he left the company and the proposal was left dangling for some time until @rishabh took it over, and there was a new enthusiasm. But then the application was dropped entirely. The offer still stands. If you’re interested in picking this up, I suggest to pursue the discussion o...

Some time after the Discourse as a company decided to return the NGI Zero funding they received for adding federation support, another company, the Pavilion cooperative - a Discourse forum integrator and plugin developer - has decided to pick up the glove and re-apply for funding. They’ll probably start developing in 2022.

Of course this is wonderful news. Discourse is developer and supplier of one of the best community forum softwares to be had, and very popular for use in FOSS projects and many open initiatives.

This move towards the Fediverse is in part thanks to various SocialHub members, who kept the topic alive on Discourse’s own forum. And it was Hellekin, admin of SocialHub and mentor for NGI0 funding, who gave the deciding push.

See also this fediverse thread. I have cross-posted this to the socialhub forum.

Social Media Reimagined

This is a companion to Fediverse Futures on SocialHub to elaborate the Fediverse from high-level, non-technical perspectives, brainstorming our visions and dreams.

We need a more holistic approach to fedi development and evolution. We need product designers, graphics artists, UX / UI / Interaction designers, futurists and visionaries to join the dev folks. Everyone is encouraged to join here and enrich our views on what Fediverse can be with diverse and different viewpoints, and to stimulate brainstorming, creativity, thinking out-of-the-box and crazy, wild ideas.

Some guidelines

  • Choose a descriptive title that speaks for itself.
  • Be substantive in your comments and stay on-topic.
  • Treat others as you want to be treated, respectful.
  • Don’t be overly critical, we are just brainstorming.
