Disroot shut down matrix mainly because of the heavy resource usage and they could not arrange funds for running the service.

Even if matrix is funded by some israel spy agency, you have the freedom to audit the code and self host the service. I personally don’t care about that.

Yes, Element is built on electron but you have freedom to chose which client you want to use. No one is forcing you to use the element app. Nheko, neochat, fractal, etc are all apps which are all native and don’t use electron. If you have the knowledge you can make your own app.

Meanwhile Discord bans users for using third party clients.

There is no perfect messaging app and every messaging app has its own problems. Signal is centralized and the developers don’t promote forks of the software. There are other problems with it as well. It also requires phone number. Signal’s desktop app is also electron.

Briar is also another alternative but the app is not available on iOS.

Telegram is open source on the client side but the server side is closed source and they don’t end to end encrypt messages by default.

Maybe write a blog post and put everything together. So I can review it and or link it, so we get both sides of user opinions, because this is all written by users and not experts or actual developers.

Btw this is not designed to bash Matrix or to point out that every protocol has weaknesses, it is designed to overview why this particular user says no to Matrix.

No need to defend or fanboy something here, just take it as is, if you have findings of your own, I would be more than happy to review and link it.

I personally dislike Matrix - right-now - because encryption is not enabled by default, and enabling it breaks useful features. Another main issue are the lack of moderating tools. But this is all.

What? Since when is encryption not the default? It’s been the default ever since I first signed up IIRC. I’m pretty sure I didn’t have to enable it myself at any point in any room. Also what features break with encryption?.

You mean E2E, right?

Yeah, we are talking about e2ee, it was added in 2020 https://matrix.org/blog/2020/05/06/cross-signing-and-end-to-end-encryption-by-default-is-here

But most home servers do not enable it by default because it will break some features. I maybe was not specific enough because direct communication via dm used e2ee since 2018 https://github.com/vector-im/element-web/issues/6779

However, the statement that is - always was encrypted - is incorrect. Until today, as said, most home servers do not encrypt group chats because it still is flawed.

Well, I did say “ever since I first signed up”, and I did sign up last year and started using it more this year, so I might have missed that :P

But yeah, I see, it’s newer than I thought it was. I’m still not sure what you mean with it being flawed/breaking features though. At most what I’ve heard is that some bots break because they have to be updated to support E2E too, but that’s it

I don’t have a blog or a personal site. That is why I posted it here. I will write one soon on write.as or something and share the link with you.

Matrix does leak metadata but that is required for federation to work.

Some advantages of Element/Matrix:

  • The UI is modern and clean. Normal people care a lot about the UI. It also has most of the features on discord.
  • Phone number is not required.
  • You can self host matrix.
  • There is no single point of failure.
  • Several clients.
  • End to end encryption by default.
  • Pretty easy to use.
  • voice chat and video call

Luke Smith made a video on Matrix vs XMPP and basically says that XMPP is superior but Matrix is more user friendly https://videos.lukesmith.xyz/w/iKwTth5CMHFanPvVV1k7bD

I’m quite tired of people dismissing user friendliness like they do. If XMPP is truly superior, it would have better UI/UX than Matrix. It doesn’t, so it’s not.

  1. xmpp doesn’t have an official client like matrix

  2. xmpp client usually do have good UI/UX, just not for boomers and normies
