The extension is not libre, though.
They have an older extension here that is free, but it hasn’t been updated since 2018.
Also checkout https://github.com/valentjn/ltex-ls which enables grammar checking in markdown, latex and more based on languagetool.

Privacy policy seems okay, but I’m still skeptical. Probably way better than grammarly.

Works on plaintext too. I used it to grammar check my thesis.
