I do like the approach of TILvids, delivering quality content for topics like FLOSS and technology. But I wish they would federate at least with some other tech instances like share.tube or diode.zone. I know that users can subscribe to channels on other instances but they still have to discover them first.

Federation is a question that comes up frequently. It’s an issue that I’ve punted on because there were creators that were uncomfortable with their content “just showing up elsewhere”. It’s already a hard sell just to get them to let us share the content to begin with, so it’s not a hill I was willing to die on. My hope is that we can actually see creators on TILvids grow over time, start their own instances, and then all federate with each other in a ring. I explained more of that in one of our recent blog posts.

That makes sense. Does peertube have a way of deciding which media federates on a case-by-case basis? More specifically, is there a way you could have a content creator opt-in to federation, and exclude the rest from being shared with other instances?

See comment below this one. They’re starting to poke at this, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see more options like that going forward.

Thanks for answering this. I’ve seen that in the newest PeerTube (v3.4) it is possible that the instance admin can follow an account or a channel without necessarily federating with the instance that hosts it. A good feature that provides the opportunity for instance admins to select on content rather than instances. It could also be what is needed for your hub and spoke model.

Yup! I was happy to see this feature get released, as it definitely would provide another avenue to the hub and spoke model (i.e. creators don’t necessarily need their own instance to federate back with TILvids, just be on an instance).

Agreed
