This is a partial cross-post from here, where I talk more about this company.

There’s a recycling company in my province, called Revolution Resource Recovery which has a recycling model whose claimed procedures make it really progressive as far as the recycling/materials recovery industry goes (read the original post linked above for details). There is one weird detail though:

Here’s the page on their site about how they deal with organic waste/compostables, again, really progressive sounding except for one thing: it mentions that they also produce and sell beef which is apparently tied into their custom organic waste recovery procedure. Specifically, they produce compost and use part of it to grow crops, some of which is in turn used to raise cattle, all on their own ranch. As far as I know they’re not directly feeding the cattle the raw organic waste.

Any vegans here want to weigh in on if using them for organics waste management would be considered vegan or not? On one hand, the organic waste they collect from you would at least partially be used to produce meat, on the other hand, you’re not directly buying meat, and I also don’t know how much of the compost from residential/commercial organic waste collected by other recycling companies (my city mandates organic waste recycling) would also be eventually going to the meat industry, whether directly or indirectly, so I don’t know if it even makes a difference as far as animal rights are concerned. The company I mentioned only do commercial and multi-family residential, which aren’t in a position to easily do their own composting or use the compost on their own plants, so there isn’t really an alternative to sending your organic waste away to be centrally composted.

I’ll also mention that I don’t use this company for my residential waste, but not due to direct personal decision, I live in a townhome/apartment complex and the waste management company we use is the decision of the community controlled strata council, so any change in the waste management company requires collective majority.
