It won’t happen because capitalism requires force to maintain property relations.

At most, maybe they could rename the division or merge it with a neighboring division, thereby “abolishing MPD”, or do accounting trickery to say its “defunded” but they have not even done this

It’s a click-bait headline - this is what the rest of the article actually says:

replace the police department with a new public safety department focused on a “comprehensive public safety approach” that would include officers “if necessary to fulfill the department’s responsibilities.”

    They’re not going for a policing-free community.

The proposal doesn’t propose to wipe out the police force, they want to relegate some of the police’s tasks onto a department. Under the clickbaity headline, the article even admits it:

replace the police department with a new public safety department focused on a “comprehensive public safety approach” that would include officers “if necessary to fulfill the department’s responsibilities.”

Ah, a source issue. Most reports use ‘replace’ instead of ‘wipe out’. Like you say the details of the article are accurate with a headline to grab folks that weren’t already following it.

Could solve a lot of problems. In Northern Ireland, replacing the police ended a war that had lasted 100 years. The devil is in the details though.
