    Many reasons for this:

    • Westernern governments don’t admit that they spy on their people, so when Westerners spot government drones they go unidentified.

    • Global South authorities have less tolerance for bullshit, so reports get ignored more often

    • Westerners are just bad at identifying flying objects (see recent news) so a higher proportion of flying objects go unidentified.

    • Alien ships use particles from their cognitive dissonance emitters to generate a cloaking field. They’re not technically invisible, but they invoke the power of cognitive dissonance to cause otherwise rational minds to completely ignore what’s in front of them. Unfortunately Westerners are already so oversaturated with mental contradictions that they emit their own particles which disrupt the alien technology and lower the cloaking effect.

According to the article this came from, the sightings are reported through the National UFO Reporting Center, a Washington state based organization. Reports are made through an English-based online form.

Westerners are just bad at identifying flying objects (see recent news) so a higher proportion of flying objects go unidentified.

This is absolutely true. Even beyond the balloon insanity, people routinely take for granted the skill it takes to identify things that are high in the atmosphere, or far out on the horizon. Those who wish to believe in aliens are likley to say a military pilot must be too technically skilled of a person to be fallible, but this is an appeal to the authority of, and the paternalism of, grandady Military.

Meanwhile some experts can actually recreate the anomolies that the military are apparently baffled by.

  • UFOs are just white saviour bs. The big story they use to claim that UFOs are not found only in the US is that there was allegedly a sighting in Zimbabwe in 1994 in a school and the children stood by their story very vividly.

As we all know schoolchildren are reliable witnesses and this private school (this is never mentioned) that was 22km away from the capital (never mentioned either) where white people would send their kids (yep, never mentioned!) obviously could not have been watching the X Files in 1994 because Africa = poor = no TV.

I believe this totally and is one of my favorite topics. But it is not always easy to get people to see it lol

The reason I could see that happening if aliens were real is those areas have more light that’s visible from space. That wouldn’t explain the lack of visits to India and China and Japan tho. Idk, maybe westerners are on more drugs

Remember the rule: if it’s impressive and in a place inhabited by colored people, aliens definitely built it because it’s not like those savages can.

      • I capped the heatmap at 25 sightings per 10M, but as you’ll see in a second, that’s because people in the USA are hilariously more likely to report a UFO sighting than anyone else. If I let the scale be free, it pretty much makes the rest of the map the same shade of blue.

In fact, people in the USA report about 2500 sightings per 10M, a number almost 300 times greater than the global median. Why are Americans obsessed with UFOs? Maybe it’s related to Internet access. You have to have Internet access to submit a report, after all.

        the plot thickens

I’m dropping in on the thread at @CountryBreakfast@lemmygrad.ml’s recommendation. The source of the statistics is an organization located in Washington state in the United States. The online form to report a UFO sighting is only in English. If you look at the map, most of the countries that have high per capita reports of UFO sightings also have a high rate of speaking English. Not every country follows that - notably Mexico and India - but most do. So while there may be cultural factors, I think sampling bias (linguistic and country of origin) is likely the largest source.

Edit: Also of note is the US’s history of advanced aircraft. During Jimmy Carter’s run for president, he promised to release all UFO-related records if elected. Immediately upon entering office, he broke that promise. There is speculation that he broke that promise because many of the sightings were stealth plane test flights. It lines up with what we now know about the timing of their development, location of certain bases, and the location of some sightings.

UFOs are big in Mexico, my mom swears on her life that she’s seen some. But it’s still funny to see us lumped in with the west on one of these maps lol

When you fail to educate your citizens on how to properly study science, nature, engineering, history, and culture, they are left with an unorganised mass of ideas, lacking a formal structure to contain them, and then fill them where they obviously don’t fit

Because they identify themselves to the global east because they feel they can work with them to make our planet better. At which point their spaceship is no longer unidentified.
