I’m just asking in order to judge interest in whether anyone would be interested in joining a furry/anthro community here in Lemmygrad.

The community itself would focus mainly on art, suits/suitmaking, discussions of important topics within the community such as the LGBT element, along with memes, sonas, discussion/events such as furcons and meetings, and as a place to find general community with fellow furs.

The space will take a staunch leftist stance, so all will be welcome without discrimination, and reactionaries, trolls, and negative elements will not be tolerated unlike places such as Reddit.

Would anyone be interested in a community like this? : )

That’s perfectly alright! It’s a very niche and commonly misunderstood and misrepresented hobby. The most basic explanation I can give is that furries are people that enjoy anthropomorphizing animals, mostly just for the simple reason that they can. Many people take their created characters and self impose themselves onto them as a stand in what is called a “sona” much like how a person might impose themselves on a DnD character they create, or how cosplayers preform or project a character.

The community then goes deeper in the sense that there is an extremely strong creative aspect of the fandom, and many people use their characters or the characters of others in art, stories, comics, and so on.

For the question of why… well the simple answer is mostly just “for fun”, as you can be creative in any way you wish with what you create, and it allows people to express or represent themselves (or aspects of themselves) to their hearts desire. Which is why the fandom has a massive percentage of LGBT and leftist members.

Hopefully this could answer some of your questions, and I’m perfectly open to any others you might have!

I honestly do not care much about it but I think it could get some people here through some other common tastes. AFAIK, @HiddenLayer5@lemmy.ml is a furry or I think he said he was, so that would be a good start, but I don’t know.

Kind of. I “self identify” as a “furry” but also am not really apart of THE furry fandom. It’s hard to explain but it’s kind of like how there’s different schools of socialism like marxism-leninism, anarcho-communism, etc.

Would still join a furry community on Lemmygrad though! Furries are kind of notorious for being libtrash so a proper socialist furry community would definitely be something I support!

  • While it is a community I’ve never particularly cared for, I see little reason not to do so. Those that are interested will engage in the community more, whereas those that it bothers can simply block it. I see only good from this, outside of the possible backlash from those that do not understand, or care to do so.

Thank you for your insight friend. I’ve been going back and forth with myself over this idea for a while, but I think your case for not giving the negative to much credence and simply going through with the idea really convinced me.

Though I do agree with the backlash sentiment, and do plan to be as open and educational as I can to people who might not understand or be misinformed. However I do also plan to be extremely active in policing against negative sentiment especially when its unwarranted or done only out of malice.

  • As a furry this could have potential, I don’t know how many of us there are tho. Could be a way to get lemmygrad more active if you can get furries on board. This Lgbt fringe community has produced a few comrades.

I feel like Lemmygrad gets a bit to tunnel-visioned with only politics, and that might discourage some new posters, or activity in general. I feel like a hobby based community might be a nice way to break up the constant political flow.

Plus from what I’ve seen, I’ve identified at least 5 furries out of daily posters, so I feel like that might be a good start. Though the initial reaction is really poor and I wouldn’t want to be a nuisance community so I’m not sure about proceeding.

I guess the reaction was significantly more negative then I expected. That’s alright then, its not a particularly groundbreaking or vital idea for a community, and I wouldn’t want to upset anyone, especially based on the reception.

Based on the downvotes here, I think some people just aren’t aware of the shit society gives these people for literally no reason. I used to think furry was some kind of nazi-fetishism until a comrade educated me otherwise. Some educational posts could be helpful in breaking some of the myths.

There happens to already exist a community called !furry@lemmygrad.ml, but it has one single post in it, and the moderator joined 3 years ago and never made even a single post. Perhaps you could ask an admin to hand it over to you? I think it’s in the best interest of all of us if communities are moderated by someone who actually checks them regularly.

As for interest, I probably can’t contribute much myself, but I’m interested to see how this turns out if you do go through with this.
