The paragraph Homeservers shows that they will be renting from Element Hosting.

They’re doing both.

Be careful with the rooms.

Rooms in Matrix are hosted in each server of the members.

If matrix.org was down, the room would be still working for users away of that server.

With the links to get access to it is a bit different, the links can be in any server you want to which an user with privileges have access.

Once the public link is added (you can put a lot of public links), the room is accessible through that public link in that server.

It’s okay to not self-host. It’s much less effort and as they said they’re helping fund further Matrix development this way by paying for hosting. And I guess they don’t want to spend too much time managing infrastructure that is not critical to their success

Besides the fact that centralization is bad and that the Matrix federation would be better served by having independent code contributions rather then funding the (already very well VC funded) for-profit arm of New-Vector/Matrix…

you realize that Ansible’s core “business” is self-hosting right?

Their core business is making a product to automate/simplify server setup, and so far I had the impression it’s mostly aimed at corporate environments, with self-hosting communities being a sidequest at best

Well, you misunderstand what I mean with self-hosting. Self-hosting is about hosting the infrastructure you use yourself…

And if Ansible isn’t willing to dogfood their own self-hosting solution for the infrastructure they use themselves, that doesn’t paint a good picture on them at all (besides the fact that Matrix is a pain to self-host).

That’s a good point actually. Now I also remembered the only use-case I had for Ansible so far was setting up a Matrix server
