I hate to side with Disney, but this was clearly a case of a government retaliating against a company for making a political statement. This is literally what the First Amendment was written to prevent.

I 100% agree and think DeSantis is in the wrong here - but I think it’s worth pointing out that if we hadn’t spent the last century having government entities heavily propping up giant companies so they can get an edge over all their competitors, then this sort of retaliation wouldn’t really be possible.

I’d be totally fine with Disney losing all it’s special priveledges, about time actually - but not because they happened to piss off one whiney politician

Yo be fair, go anywhere in Florida away from the coast to see the difference Disney made there, and then the special district starts to seem like it was a great deal.

It still is. The tourism dollars the mouse brings in is absolutely worth letting him have the district.

The First Amendment protects the right of free speech even if it goes against government powers, Disney said in court documents asking a judge to reject DeSantis’ motion to dismiss the entertainment giant’s First Amendment lawsuit in Tallahassee.

Is…is this not settled? I thought we were all clear on this one tiny thing.

Nobody who is actually a libertarian is confused. The “I’m ashamed to identify as a Republican” crowd is confused.

It’s interesting. Just like USA “left wing” isn’t really left on the global stage, we also don’t have the same idea of what “libertarian” means (meant, maybe) globally, either. I’m pretty sure all our ivory towers, from wretchedly impoverished to the billionaires are about to come crashing down, starting with the poorest poor, of course. But like another user elsewhere said, it’s definitely a domino effect.

Most people that know anything about Disney laughed when this thing started because they knew what was coming. Yet DeSantis kept digging that hole.

And then Disney started marketing planned developments conveniently long enough so people weren’t watching the Ron and Disney show!
