There are a lot of “Shit X Says” communities now, which inevitably leads to quite a few cross-posts and makes people less likely to see others’ comments (e.g. someone comments on a “Shit Liberals Say” post, someone else on the “Shit Fascists Say” version of the post, etc.). It might be a good idea to just have one “Shit Reactionaries Say” community, either by creating a new one or by repurposing the most popular one (SLS), and then setting the other communities to only allow mod posts (basically read-only).
Thank you for coming to my TEDxLemmygrad talk. Proposal co-authored with a second mysterious tankie

Addendum: may be a good idea to also have one community for ultra-leftists separate from the one for general reactionaries.

  • List of all the Shit X Says communities in Lemmygrad:

    • Shit Liberals Say
    • Shit Fascists Say
    • Shit Centrists Say
    • Shit Monarchists Say
    • Shit PCM Users Say
    • Shit PatSocs Say
    • Shit Anarchists Say
    • Shit MLMs Say
    • Shit Lemmy.ml Says
    • Shit TERFs Say
    • Enough Haz Spam -> Shit Haz/Infrared Says
    • Nazbol Cringe -> Shit Nazbols Say

I can see unifying SLS, SFS, SCS, SMS, SPCMUS (Political Compass Memes 99% of the time tend to just be Left bad, Right good anyway), SPSS, SL.mlS, STERFS, SHS and SNBS into a single “Shit Reactionaries Say” community, but I’m wondering, can Anarchists and Gonzalites/Marxists-Leninists-Maoists really be considered reactionary?

      • That’s what I’m saying, it will be weird if MLMs were suddenly considered reactionary out of nowhere. Though, I’m wondering, what about Anarchists? Do we put them in the Ultra category?

This isn’t just a response to you, Alunyanners, but it seems to fit here.

Agree that we shouldn’t be alienating MLMs or other Marxists. If an ‘MLM’, ‘Trotskyist’, or ‘ML’ says something reactionary it could be posted in a ‘c/ShitReactionariesSay’.

I’m tempted to suggest that we make clear to be criticising the ideas rather than the people, as criticising people might push people away who would otherwise be sympathetic and maybe become communists. But this might be a different issue and could result in tone policing.

Still, I’d suggest being careful with ‘shit lemmy.ml says’ because it’s reactionary ideas, anywhere, that’s problematic, not Lemmy or its users per se. Merging the above communities solves this.

As for the difference between reactionaries and people who claim to be communists, like Pat Socs, I can see the argument that they are different. But which is more abstract for the pretenders. Ultras or leftcoms? Or are they the same? And is the problem with ultras, patsocs, anarchists, etc, that they end up supporting capitalism and are therefore in the same camp as reactionaries? If so, one merged community might do. Or is it the additional danger of bastardising Marxism that’s a problem. If so, that might help us with the theme of a second ‘c/shitXXXXsay’.

MLMs, like anarchists (and unlike MLs), don’t yet have a single victory. Since their tenets are

              • Dogmatic adherence to original marxist texts, calling everything else “revisionist”.
              • Opposition to all existing socialist states, and all other left groupings.
              • Belief in the universal applicability of specific revolutionary strategies, such as “peoples war”.
              • Rejection of local people as being too politically unenlightened.
              • Terrorist tactics: bombings, assassinations, etc.

Most MLM’s may say, they oppose western imperialism, but by focusing their vitriol at most existing socialist states, they further the western agenda and strategy of promoting balkanization and disunity between socialist countries. MLM’s (and their progenitors in the unfortunate ultra-leftism of the cultural revolution) essentially want to re-create the sino-soviet split, which was a huge boon to western imperialism. Nowadays the leaders of the CPC, Russia, Syria, and other anti-imperialist countries, while being incredibly different politically, are rightfully not doing what MLM’s propose: to denounce everyone as “revisionist”.

There’s nothing wrong with armed revolutionary activity of course, but MLMs have shown so far that the best way they think to carry this out, is via assassinations of community leaders, bombings, and massacres of peasants… literally the opposite of what people like Fidel and Mao advocated.

Yes, if they do side with imperialists (otherwise they would not be posted here) therefore they are objectively reactionary no matter their rhetorics, this was extensively covered by Lenin and Stalin.

Yes please. I only ever have my settings set to “subscribed” now because otherwise it is an endless spam of them and every week or so it seems like there is a new one getting created. It’s staring to feel like the sites just being infiltrated by people using the “shit x says” to spam us with reactionary trash. When I joined here there was a moderate amount of actual discussion about theory, current events, etc but now it’s just an endless stream of some assholes on Twitter saying shit for the express purpose of pissing you off.

I mean there are 12(?) different ones for this stuff on a site so small we don’t even have like, a cooking or food sub. At this rate the whole instance is going to just turn into this and anything meaningful will get buried.

I’m the same. I participate in those communities now and again when I sort by all or local, but otherwise I stick to subscribed because I’m on Lemmygrad so I don’t have to see what reactionaries say. It’s okay in moderation but my tolerance is quite low.

  • Definitely agree, and we can make it a rule even. I know also some people are tired of seeing “downer” posts these communities produce and it’s easier for them to block out a single community than a whole lot of them.

I’ll let other people decide how many new unified communities their should be though, but once we’ve reached a solution we can start enacting it.

  • So, in a nutshell, what you want is a community merger between a good chunk of the “Shit X Says” communities into one big community. Tho, I’d suggest another big boy community for the ultras, like the anarchildren, cringe trots and MLMs, like idk, “stuff ultraleftists say.”

  • I agree, but i’d rather unify some of them into smaller ones. I think something from an anarchist is more rich then something from idk a PCM user, I think a certain amount of context is necessary, so I’d unify them into multiple different communities. We dont have to, but I feel like Gonzaloists and Anarchists can go together, while centrists and PCM could merge, for example. Im open to whatever though, just a thought.

Not sure if that would be necessary, since the user can just block the community, if they don’t ever want to see it. I think it should be marked as NSFW if the posts within were able to cause harm to some people by just viewing a single post.

Yeah, you are right. Now that I think of it, nsfwing it sort of allows people to choose a middle ground (since blocking it would, make it so that you never see it, which may not be desired by some who want to avoid that type of content but still sometimes want to see it regardless).

Yes, I think this is a good idea. It takes forever to check each cross-post for comments, and they all essentially have the same content, just coming from a different category of people, so they should be one community in my opinion.

However, we don’t want to lose all the current content and such. I think the easiest way to do this is probably to set all the S*S communities to Mod Only, remove all the current mods and replace with one or more admins, make a new SRS, and then put something like “Pursuant to People’s Court case https://lemmygrad.ml/post/475170, post content that would’ve gone here in <insert link to SRS> instead” into the sidebar and in a pinned post.

One thing to watch out for in future might be people who want to mod the merged group. They might set up a new community knowing/thinking that it will be closed and merged so that their mod status is transferred over to the main merged group.

I’m unsure if this would be part of the plan for new communities of this sort, but we should guard against creating a way for wreckers, etc, to get mod powers over a large community. Just a thought.

I vote yes. And yes a separate “shit ultras say” community which would obviously have much less content and possibly need different moderation as I have no doubt there are those who would dispute what is and isn’t ultra behavior including putting some good comrades there or insisting obvious ultras have the correct line.

It should note of course in the rules for new-comers that liberals are reactionaries and such content should be posted there.

I absolutely agree to repurpose these communities into “Shit Reactionaries Say” and “Shit Ultra-leftists Say”. The latter even has an appropriate “SUS” abbreviation 😄

Reading the comments here, it’s very apparent that there is a major agreement on those changes, and we shall now focus on implementation of those changes
