• I agree with the sentiment but he is factually wrong. Child labour is illegal in China like in the “civilised” world (let’s be honest that the trope of whole armies of Chinese children making your cheap stuff is racist in several ways). Sure, there may be detractors to this rule but it’s not an institution and they are operating illegally.

    However, there was (until 2020) extreme poverty in China – we’re talking people who live with their whole family in clay houses for their whole lives. And in those areas child labour was common of course, to some extent, but the government is doing a lot of work to teach these kids and resettle these families in modern apartments. Most of this extreme poverty is found in very remote areas and moving the villages in a more accessible environment allows them to have more economic opportunities. By and large these parents want their children to go to school so they can move to the cities and make a life for themselves.
