what lemmy devs and community think about reddit’s karma?
Is it in the works ? do plan you on integrating it when lemmy becomes bigger? would you use it for automodeation ?
Ps: I personally hate that thing, what about you?
We originally had the karma count in user profiles, but decided to remove it because it leads to negative behaviour like karma farming. I think you can still see it in the API somewhere.
We also recently added a user setting to hide scores entirely, which is probably better for mental well being overall.
That’s nice, would be a good default really to have less focus on points and more on interesting posts and discussions.
Thank you! I really appreciate that on a social media platform!
Good, I hate the points systems and it really does lead to people being terrible on the likes of Reddit. Internet points makes some people go mad with power.
I agree with that too.
I agree with all the other commenters saying no to karma. Reddit’s karma system leads to negative behaviors (users and mods putting importance on magic internet number -> spam/scam bots gaming the system to increase this number -> users complaining about bots and reposts).
We’re better off without it
I highly doubt it. And I think Lemmy is better off without karma.
Agree. Karmaremoved is an issue on Reddit. People farming karma to sell accounts among the things. Yeah, better without.
Lemmy doesn’t need a karma system similar to Reddit.
God I hope not
Much better without karma mining thing
If I remember correctly, there’s already a karma system in place in the backend, but there’s either no frontend way of displaying it, or the admins of most Lemmy instances don’t bother turning it on.
It actually does still come through the API, but we choose not to display it.
Karma should be a trivial statistic at most. Go to user’s page, see their post/comment totals; they don’t really affect anything directly, but you can see the numbers if you want to go looking. Even limiting it to that, I think users should be allowed to hide theirs.
Instead, we should have better filtering mechanisms based on personal preferences.
Google Reader had excellent suggestions based on the “reshare/starring” of a post done by accounts you follow.
Oh karma go me pwease uWu
