I know the various manufacturers and 3rd party research entities are pumping their energy (pun?) into research around improved battery storage not only for EVs but also for grid storage. Battery tech has been largely stagnant until this more recent requirement for EVs, and now it is taking off in all different directions.

I actually thought Toyota had been holding back and preferring to go with hydrogen fuel cell EVs, but it turns out no, they have also been working very hard around solid state battery technology.

This video explains what solid state batteries are, the advantages we can expect to see, but also some of the challenges before they really go mainstream into the market (assuming of course something else does not have a break through).

Electric vehicles are already becoming the “now” but we clearly battery technology is still advancing rapidly, but that battery technology has to be affordable and efficient.

As with any battery technology, I’ll believe it when they start actually selling them. New battery tech pops up on a semi regular basis, but there’s a long and hard journey between the lab and the factory so most of them never make it to market.
