My lately neglected guitar is keeping its abused stares at me and I want to pick up playing again. I’ve rediscovered my love for blues lately so I want to focus on that a bit more.

You guys play any instruments?

I’ve played the violin since I was little, but have neglected it due to life in the past few years and I’ve probably forgotten quite a lot. Back when I used to play however, it was always nice relaxing escape that helped take my mind off the stress of life.

Since I love music, I would also like very much to learn guitar or piano, but that’s sadly not in my cards at the moment.

  • I’m so terrible with my left hand, ive tried piano and memorized a few songs but its just too hard for my brain to tell my left and right hand what to do simultaneously. I can’t type with my left hand either I use one finger the whole time. My right hand is like a typist from the 40’s just perfectly typing 150 wpm’s on a typewriter without a mistake for 8 hours a day. but my left hand is like an uncoordinated nerd forced to take gym class or fail, who is just struggling to breathe and understand gravity for the first time.

Piano, mainly jazz for the past few years. I have some good christmas jazz piano books, so I’ve been using those as a break.

Playing an instrument is one of the best things you can do to relax and be creative, rather than just consooming content like we do most of the day, which is incredibly unhealthy after a certain point.

Find some great blues albums that you’re excited about, slow them down to play along, and get some tabs if you need a head start… Kenny Burell - Midnight blue is a great early jazzy-blues guitar album that I wanna learn someday.

I’m thinking about Harmonica lately. Not extremely tough to pick up but difficult to master. Very cheap and portable, idk i might try it out

I can sing pretty decently (if one can call singing an equivalent to playing an instrument), and “play” the drums (as in, make enough random beats to make a tune). Other than that, no clue on how to tune a guitar or how to fiddle with a violin.

my school gave free instrument lessons for every student so I picked Clarinet, played it for 4-5 years until I couldn’t fit it into my timetable anymore. Kind of wish I didn’t drop it tbh it’s a pretty cool fun fact to share about yourself

can play proficiently on Sax by proxy of it’s similarity to Clarinet too which is nice

I can scream and sing pretty well. I have a dusty guitar I’ve neglected for too long but my joint disorder makes it difficult to play. Wanted to learn the piano a long time ago but the opportunity hasn’t presented itself. When I was 14 I spent all my money ordering a viola from Amazon and got told by a guitar store employee that I had wasted my money on a glorified doorstop. We really don’t appreciate art here, do we? Many children have a deep seated desire to create music but wind up not being able to due to finances and lack of adequate support systems. It sucks so hard.

Wait like he thought violas were useless or it was so poorly costructed that it was unplayable? I’d be offended by the former!

Unfortunately music isn’t profitable really except for overproduced pop music intended solely for spewing out of the content hose, so arts education is in the shitter

It was a cheap $60 viola from Amazon, so just that that specific piece was functionally garbage haha. It was definitely still crushing to hear.

Absolutely, just another example of the profit motive dictating what is or isn’t worth investing energy and capital into. Such a shame, as music is one of the most brilliant forms of human expression that exists.

Not entirely related but I think the USSR had union/worker choirs and I know revolutionary songs were important in China, I’d be curious what role people think music could play in a revolutionary context or something?

I read that the accordion became extremely popular in Asia despite coming from France because the revolutionary army orchestra used it as a portable alternative to piano to play the in the villages that they visited. Playing music is a great way to link the revolution to the cultural life of the people, a strategy that is extremely effective to rally support and have been used by every mass communist organisation.

Played guitar for ~6 years, only ever really did covers. Also have played clarinet (lol), harmonica, and a little bit of piano, again all covers. I’ve been trying to learn to sing the last ~3 years and I enjoy it creatively a lot. I also like producing music digitally, it would be cool to learn piano proper and have a MIDI keyboard or whatever they’re called where I can input directly and humanly into a program. Nice thing about singing though is you can take your instrument anywhere 🥰

Blues is awesome! My current favorite is St. James Infirmary

Remember to tell your guitar that you love it and are sorry for the state of things. Or at least that’s what I do when I neglect my instrument(s) :-/

Went to uni for music (percussionist) under the foolish idea of ‘do what you love and you will never work again’. More like ‘do what you love until the love for it is drained out of you’.

Anyway…I had to take a break for a while but now I play again when I can summon the energy. These days I focus on drumset (jazz/latin/funk) and solo marimba.

I’m gonna kiss my guitar tonight. I’m doing it.

I always loved drumming as a kid. My parents really should have encouraged music more.
