I remember first hearing about it on r/animecirclejerk where they were rightly shredding into the incel trash who defended it as “Muh fiction, let me fantasise about revenge raping women who didn’t go out with me” etc.

I googled it since none of the context about the content was included. Beyond gross.

What the fuck?! Are you even aware of the anime I’m criticising?

First episode the main character literally threatens a girl to choose between rape by him or rape by a hot iron poker.

He also breaks all her fingers and tortures her for fun.

And then after raping her, brainwashes her to be his sex slave.

This anime got widely criticised for the degenerate shit above.

If you are apologising for this sort of anime you need to have a long hard look at yourself.

        • What the… that description makes sure I do not want to see it. I am pretty cold blooded but it seems like a genre that is better off outside of my head. No need to ruin anime, the way I watch it.

As GrainEater mentioned, revenge plots can be great, but legitimising rape and torture of women to feed a male fantasy is beyond acceptable.

You’d think it was so hentai but no, it was a legit anime 😰

Revenge style plots are done like in Berserk, and those turn out to be legendary.

grim, dark scene described as text

Although it does have Griffth (one of the head apostles) raping Casca and it is very demonic, it has very archaic setting. You can question the rape but it allowed for Berserk to happen.

I do not want to come across as justifying it as fiction, and I do not think something like Berserk can or will be made again.

Also a warning, that scene is too grim and dark. If you have not watched it and cannot stomach it, please do not watch it.

For me I can begrudgingly handle the implication if it is a part of a characters motivation, many movies do it and while I do find it a bit cliche and almost tropey “oh male protagonist’s female companion or family is raped, now he’s mad” it’s not anywhere near as aggregious to me as showing a full scene especially in graphic detail.

I think a lot of male writers don’t see the issue because historically and culturally rape is seen as the ultimate bad to women and not men in the same way (again it’s sexism as men can be raped too) and therefore don’t realise why for female watchers/consumers it’s so abhorrent and traumatising, because it was made essentially mainstream and something to be accepted by female watchers in their eyes.

However if women started making anime or movies that featured a lot of male rape I bet you’d see a sharp condemnation of the media by men as the concept and plot device now swivels to focus on them.

It plays into why so many chuds defended Redo, the main character who I described in that comment is sexually assaulted (they never said rape in the summary I read) by several characters including the girl he then revenge rapes and tortures in the first episode.

For a lot of people watching they vehemently defended Redo saying that what the main character does to the girl in the first episode is justified because of the sexual assault the protagonist suffered. Apart from it been quite clear the protagonist goes above and beyond in his revenge compared to what happened to him, I think for a lot of male consumers and defenders of redo they genuinely felt a similar (but i’d argue lesser due to what ive mentioned above and context) primal disgust and uncomfortable feeling hearing about what happened to the male protagonist and therefore reacted and defended the animes garbage rape fetishisation.

It’s wrong and an eye for an eye is never acceptable regarding sexual assault, rape etc but I find it interesting that when the dynamic was shifted ever so slightly, men got a taste of what women have had to suffer for years through media and men’s reaction was so loud compared to the societally expected “it’s for the plot, shut up and cope” tolerance of the trope placed on women regarding the same narrative beat and I think that shows that the plot/trope isn’t fun or good at all.

I liked berserk but it was grimdark to a point that made me sometimes uncomfortable that I think it didn’t need to be but it’s an old manga so while I don’t think that justifies it, I not going to view or judge it in the same light as redo.

There are too many chuds and incels/femcels out there. Acceptance is one hell of a thing, and closeted celibacy really allows to give shape to loser personalities. I know this so deeply because once upon a time I had incel like behaviour, and it was very, very horrible. I took my time and developed myself because I knew how wrong it was for everyone and myself.

I cannot write more, this is depressing.

Berserk has really spoken to me so far because of Guts’ trauma… he and Casca mirror each other in that way, I feel, and it allows for exploration of themes dealing with trauma very seriously rather than merely as a plot motivater for Guts. He’s a big, strong, angry man but he also allows himself to cry and to remember. I agree that it goes too far sometimes, I just love Berserk and think it’s incredible how a manga from that period actually had the nerve to tackle CSA against a male. As a genderfucked AMAB person, in part caused by the abuse I endured as a child, it is absolutely liberating to see this embodiment of manliness struggle in a similar way and attempt to overcome the toxic aspects of his masculinity. His fight for revenge is not only for Casca, but for the reflection of himself.

The anime removing a lot of that aspect of Guts bothered me, although I still enjoy it. I have to go into it with the meta-context of Guts having undergone the same trauma as he does in the manga to get full appreciation out of it, though.

It is literally fiction No one is apologising for it I am only stating my thoughts on that, that some finction is absolutely unacceptable in someone’s mind.

You are talking like this happened to an actual flesh and blood person. If even 1/10th of that happened, yeah surely it is a huge tragedy. I don’t get your equating of some non existing fictional animated characters’ pain with actual living beings

Turning pain and violence into entertainment directly feeds into the culture of violence against women that permeates society. Fiction doesn’t exist in a vacuum: it reflects the culture in which is created.

I wouldn’t expect some total skeeze who watches real life gore and pain as entertainment to satisfy your morbid curiosity to understand why rape culture is fuelled by fictionalised and sensationalised rape though. Disgusting.

            You’re an absolute chud.

The legitimisation of violence against women even in fiction is crass and disgusting. Just because some incel mangaka invented a plot to attempt to justify it is still not okay.

Yet another dogshit take from you I see.

Your assuming everyone adheres to your interpretation of essentially slang/jargon when that’s beyond stupid to assume.

The words literally don’t mean what you say and for you to assume that it’s fine and that everyone should adhere to your perception is chauvinistic and arrogant af.

You don’t get to pick what you want Internet slang to mean and then assume everyone’s read your newsletter.

Get a grip and get over yourself.

The heavier they go into the fan service the less I care about a character. Doesn’t matter how deep or interesting they are. It’s like a complete inverse. The more of one the less of the other. I’m not talking about interested in a sexual way either. I mean I simply stop caring about the character in general and when they are on screen I actively loose interest in watching the show. I want well designed characters thay have personality and plot points.

When your anime character is just boobs the personality it really irritates me. Way to reduce female characters to an object.

  • Fan service sucks. Can’t even watch Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex without gratuitous close-ups on the main character’s ass. Kinda takes me out of it.

How much anime seems likes its shot via drone so it can look up a high school girl’s short skirt while all of the other actions occur?
