Any recommendations for reasonably good HardSF movies worth a watch?
Sunshine was quite ok if I remember correctly :)
It’s not hard sci fi but you need to watch Primer, best sci fi movie I’ve seen.
Primer is one of those movies that you want to watch again straight after finishing it. Not just because it’s good, but because you need another watch to understand what is was you just watched.
Fucking right, it is really complex.
in addition to ones already mentioned I’d add Arrival, A Scanner Darkly, Gattaca
depends where one draws one’s lines for ‘hard’ i suppose!
i remember enjoying europa report (2013). i’d put threads (1984) into this category too, though it’s not shiny-futuristic/space type of sci-fi at all.
Hmm, maybe I should watch Europa Report again. I hardly remember it but I think I saw it before. But that I don’t remember it much usually means I didn’t like it.
it’s certainly got its flaws so i can understand people not liking it! i do tend to be overly forgiving with genre fare 😅
Underwater (2020) is also a quite decent variation of the Alien type movie, but in a deep-sea mining station.
2010: The Year We Make Contact is a great example of 80s-era hard SF.

Solaris isn’t very hard-SF though :) But I agree, especially the original Russian version is worth a watch.
