I spend nearly as much time talking about how I want to stop eating meat as I do eating it

Bruh. I haven’t read the full article yet so this is partially meta, but I went through a lot of reddit threads recently about this topic. It’s nice how many (non-vegan) people are enthusiast about lab-grown meat - but what saddens me is that a lot of omnis are using this as an excuse to simply discard the the perspective of going vegan, because once lab-grown meat will start to gain popularity they think they can entirely switch to a lab-grown meat-based diet, so why even bothering changing your diet now when you can wait a few years for science to come up with a “solution” to your laziness?

I feel like out there there’s plenty of people who are aware of the moral toll of eating meat and consuming diary products, but there’s something that just doesn’t click in their brains. They understand animal suffering is bad but can’t really feel enough empathy toward the animals - this might result in them trying to go vegan but dropping veganism after a while or they become “nice vegans” backpatting carnists for not eating meat one meal per week and circlejerking with them about how “militant” vegans are preachy and pushy. Or complimenting them for being “on the same side” when they say that they don’t plan to go vegan but would entirely switch to artificial meat when it will be available.

I’m not trying to imply that lab-grown meat is overall bad and might cause more suffering in the short term by giving borderline omnis a moral alleviation, I’m just expressing a trend I’ve been observing lately and that that first line in the article reminded me about

oooh, yes, it’s a classic already:

a potentially nice thing that will be used by omnis as a moral excuse not to go vegan and by companies to divert attention from the detriments of animal farming to make omnis feel better about themselves

      major vertical farming vibes here
