The richest 10% of the global population, comprising about 630 million people, were responsible for about 52% of global emissions over the 25-year period, the study showed.

Globally, the richest 10% are those with incomes above about $35,000 (£27,000) a year, and the richest 1% are people earning more than about $100,000.

      […]

If left unchecked, in the next decade the carbon emissions of the world’s richest 10% would be enough to raise levels above the point likely to increase temperatures by 1.5C, even if the whole of the rest of the world cut their emissions to zero immediately

      […]

“The best possible, morally defensible purpose is for all humanity to live a decent life, but [the carbon budget] has been used up by the already rich, in getting richer,” said [Tim] Gore.

He pointed to transport as one of the key drivers of growth in emissions, with people in rich countries showing an increasing tendency to drive high-emitting cars, such as SUVs, and take more flights.

Western societies’ individuals and non-western society upperclass members (“the 10%”) have an enormous impact on the carbon budget, even without considering the 1% lifestyle’s impact. We’ve collectively been driven to think that our lifestyle, that bows to individualistic pleasure and consumerism, has no toll on the environment - while the reality is that the past century’s trend is not sustainable regardless of how the world’s 1% lives (don’t get me wrong, they’re the first thing to fix in this whole income inequality mess). God I fucking hate cars. After we get rid of the rich we should start getting rid of cars as the main mean of transportation too

But the article said rich people meat is very polluting to produce!

We should stop breeding rich people altogether.

Meanwhile people like Elon Musk keep passive aggressively telling us peasants to be more green.

You want to actually save the Earth? Get rid of capitalism.

We need “People for the Ethical Treatment of Workers,” or “PETW”
