      Another aspect I really like is that it keeps the fertilizers in one place rather than allowing them to run off into water systems and cause algal blooms or something.

    If the electricity for a vertical farm is supplied by solar panels, the energy production takes up at least as much space as the vertical farm saves.

    Sure, but solar isn’t the only renewable out there. Hydro for example can provide a ton of power for not that much space (though it also has problems, like damming up rivers). There’s also the use case of putting solar panels on land unsuitable for farming.
