Ukraine’s Ministry of Energy is considering building a bitcoin mining center to utilize the country’s excess nuclear power.

Sadly computer parts are really brittle and prone to failure. You probably know Nuclear powerplants work for a fraction of their power. It would be cool to see the most theoretical power the nuclear reactor can produce and that a crypto miner can consume at the same time. But we don’t want 2nd chernobyl again so…

nuclear power is the third last harmful/deadly energy source both to the planet and humans working there, and if they have excessive amounts of it, why not put it to use by attaining some financial autonomy 🤷‍♀️

They import a large amount and almost half of the own production comes from fossil fuels.

importing electricity and having excessive capacity are not mutually exclusive

nuclear power plants are not able to to adjust their energy output fast, if at all, which means that, for example, in the morning there may be an excessive amount of nuclear electricity generated, which they don’t know what to do with

where a city of 50,000 had to be abandoned overnight and left as a ghost town for a century or so

even if we ignore that much of this could be prevented if the soviet government acted faster and cared less about it’s appearance, even so, the number of premature deaths from the accident is estimated by the WHO to be about 4,000, and only 30 people died directly from the accident

and remember, this is the single biggest nuclear reactor disaster, these death tolls are absolutely destroyed by hundreds of thousands of deaths that occurred over the past decades in the coal/oil/natural gas/hydro energy industries

and this is not even counting all the indirect deaths from things like water and air pollution caused by fossil fuel energy industry, which by WHO estimates kills 4,200,000 people per year!

But then to use it to mine bitcoin, perhaps the most useless technology in existence and a waste of massive amounts of energy… There might be a cryptocurrency that some day provides actual value, but Bitcoin certainly isn’t it. Bitcoin is a complete and utter fiasco.

well, yeah, bitcoin isn’t perfect by any means and has a lot of design flaws, but it’s the biggest cryptocurrency, and I’m assuming that if you would want to trade with another government outside of fiat currencies you’d want to use the biggest and the somewhat stable? currency

again, not saying it’s perfect, but i see why they did that, plus, there are so many much more significant energy wastes that not only do not benefit anybody but do a lot of harm…
