I’ve seen Ukraine supporters claiming the Russia is conscripting anti-war protesters. The only sources I’ve seen for this are western, and the statement on the partial mobilization clarifies that it’s a mobilization strictly of already enlisted military personnel.

I highly doubt it’s true, but if anyone has sources or knows more about this I’d like to better understand it.

I wouldn’t be too surprised by that, but it’s not like you just walk up to a random dude and hand him the papers summoning him to the voenkomat.

I suspect that those protesters were already on the line to be conscripted anyways. Papers need to be prepped in advance and it’s not like the random dudes are getting conscripted. It’s just that voenkoms are known to come to you in the places where you are easiest to find. Like your workplace (yeah, they might be coming up to you in the middle of the workday) or your home.

What I think happened is that those voenkoms found out that the fellas that were to receive the papers got detained and just decided to hand in the shit where the soon-to-be-conscripts wouldn’t have it easy to run away.

Source: Our actual Russian sources for the news and my own ass for the rest. I’m “военнообязанный” myself, but I’m category 2 so might not be in the first wave, considering that I haven’t served in the military at all.

Interesting thing about conscription: No matter how desperarte an army gets, there is a laundry list of things that a person needs to go through before they can get shipped off to a warzone. Otherwise you’re just making your forces weaker.

I can’t imagine you’d want such people to be conscripted because they wouldn’t be very cooperative. Unless it was some kind of execution by proxy? That sounds a bit silly even if it was true.

it would only be “execution by proxy” if Ukraine’s soldiers refuse to accept surrender. Because, realistically, anti-war protesters would more likely surrender and defect than actually fight.
