I dont know… with all the war in russia ukraine, then taiwan crisis… all this make me misses 2019 to early 2022 Genzedong Era OG subreddit… god those were the glory days. I still remember that ‘uyghur bullshit masterpost’, then the flares. And back then was some good shitposting bout china and based commies state (which we still do, but it doesnt feel the same to me as on the OG sub)… then the flares ‘ximp’ ‘shitpost maybe’ etc… the automod respons…and also lib cringe weekend… but those days are over… and boy do i misses those days… 😔

Oh god, same. I remember when the sub was still alive and growing at what I thought was a pretty good pace, until the fucking neoliberal Ukraine circlejerk began and they couldn’t have anyone question the narrative around zaddy Zelensky and the “relatively civilized, relatively European” post-Maidan regime.

its honestly baffling how much western media coverage around euromaidan changed after february. acknowledging the foreign/obama administration intervention aspects and far-right ultranationalism insurgence within the ukraine used to be a totally fine discussion to have and was even occasionally covered by some of the mainstream neoliberal media broadcasters; now if i even suggest euromaidan having coup d’etat characteristics i might as well be walking around with a fucking tin foil hat on and wearing a black shirt with a giant, white Z on it.

I miss the abrasiveness, and the whole “triggering the libs” (but in a commie way) that we used to do – just the general energy, like a worksite mixed with a high level college course. Most online political spaces have a pessimistic feel to them. R/genzedong didn’t. It seemed like we were part of a much larger ecosystem then, with Haz, Maupin and that whole circle not yet having thrown in clearly for the MAGA camp.

What I don’t miss is the low-level hornyposting (though it was fun when a lib got caught out), and the near-constant discussions about porn and sex work. At a certain point, these happened almost weekly, and it was always a raging dumpster fire.

Lib cringe weekend was epic, and we should bring it back.

r/genzhou was the real loss. That got shut down with no stated reason, it was the real danger because it educated.

  • it is kind of sad how the subreddit is totally dead compared to before quarantine. but, i wouldn’t be here if not for it, so it is what it is. after all, nothing stays the same forever

The sub really is dying. Top posts stay the same for 3 days now. Not saying that we should make a “replacement sub”, but we should maybe look for other up-and-coming commie subs to hang out at and keep a healthy presence in Reddit. Some of you might say “tankie shitposting won’t radicalize anybody” but it did catch my attention and help educate me a lot as a communism-curious lib in early 2020. But answering the main question, yeah. For some reason it’s not the same vibe here as it was on r/gzd back in the day.

Dialectics : r/chapotraphouse becomes more and more pro China, Reddit bans them, r/Genzedong take refugees and grows, new podcast, more radical, spawns with their supports, Reddit bans r/Genzedong, new podcast subreddit ready to radicalize even further

Chapotraphouse was a left wing political podcast initially. With time their dedicated subreddit went way further than the podcasters until the point they didn’t even listened to it anymore. Now The Deprogram is the new cool left wing podcast and they’ve got their subreddit as well

I find that really interesting. I was never on reddit, but there was a pretty huge shift in the vibes on lemmygrad earlier this year when a bunch of GZD users signed up. It’s like, a really neat and tiny example of the way two communities coming together shift each other. You guys shifted lemmygrad to be more like GZD but, I gather from this post, not the same. And I’d say the reason is in part because lemmygrad shifted your community in return?

It definitely did. As much as we tend to hate on reddit, the way the platform works still was part of what made the sub what it was. Lemmygrad provides a different context with different features, etc and that just changes the way the community works. Flairs, videos, etc change the vibe and content on the platform. Reddit is just a lot more meme-y and viral like that. A big part is also simply the smaller user base. Insider jokes and stuff just develop and spread much faster and further the bigger the community.

So yeah, the community lost a lot of its humor and originality in content-creation. We don’t really produce the memes and jokes here like we used to. On the other hand the discussions are of even higher quality, the ideology is much more principled and conversations tend to go on much longer. It’s better overall I’d say, but it’d still be nice to get some of the light-hearted humor and originality back, especially when politics are getting ever more depressing.

That’s what I was trying to pinpoint. It’s not very memey in here, plus no video support changes things a lot. No funny flairs or auto-response bots either.

Yeah, it’s just those little things that people bounce off and that bounce off each other that really make it feel like a community. A way to default-expand pictures on the browser version would help too imo. I tend to just scroll past memey content if I don’t see the actual picture straight away.

Wish those could be implemented at some point, maybe even embed videos at least.

I’m kinda glad we’re platforming discussion over memey-content, but I agree the GZD sub had some bangers and top-tier shit-posting. We’ll eventually get those as we grow🤞

Agree, but the good thing is we aren’t restricted to one sub anymore, so I’d say there’s plenty of space for discussions and top-tier shitposting

Agree somewhat. With losing such a large part of the userbase naturally a lot of the overall flair, jokes, memes get lost. Lemmygrad isn’t r/GZD - and it shouldn’t be - but it still would’ve been nice to conserve a bit more of that vibe than we managed to.

Also no flak for the admins here, because they’re doing a great job, but maybe some more QoL and UI changes could’ve been made to aid the transition.

That sub will never be unquarantined. In fact, we are kind the only people with a political ideology that western media silences, no matter how many right wing liberals whine about them being silenced.

      • Why it will never be unquarantined? I wished that there is something we can do to get it back.

It will eventually be banned then, and I will finally leave that god forsaken website, I’m literally still on it just because of the sub.

        • short answer: because reddit is an op and highly curated by western governments and other various bourgeois forces. isn’t someone formerly part of the US gov literally working at reddit now? feelsbadman

I’m scared that it will be banned. My memories are spent there, I remember joining the sub for the first time, it honestly felt like home. I also wish we could get it unquarantined, but we both know fascist reddit would never do that. Our best home is here on lemmygrad comrade.

          • I know, I’m following it and am on Reddit since 2019-early 2020, I really wish that there is a chance to be unquarantined, what are we supposed to do for it to get it back, what does Reddit want from us?

Reddit doesn’t want anything but for us to be wiped from existence. They’ll do anything in order to get rid of the idea of communism, and to support the brainwashing of the masses into being selfish pricks who only care about money. They already teach children that this world is just a “cold world where every man is for himself” but it’s just not true at all, and it’s not even human nature.

Miss it as much as you want, it won’t be coming back. there will be more censorship as global capitalism continues its death spiral.

Anyway, Reddit is not profitable and will eventually shut down. People will eventually return to having their separate websites.

There is a lot of world development right now, it may not be good for all of us but it is certainly better than a USA capitalist peace. The rise of multipolar world is happening as we speak and it won’t happen peacefully. Let the world burn, let the people starve and loose jobs, it will only radicalize them and create a revolutionary situation in which a good organized party that will address the issues can thrive and gather a lot of supporters.
