I’m not going to read that paper, but if it really is just based on man-on-the-street interviews, then literally any man-on-the-street interview shot in the US would thusly prove that Americans are just “incapable of empathy”, because that’s not a metric of the population in the slightest. Like, gee, I guess people don’t like random strangers pointing a camera or a microphone in their face unannounced, and tend to get easily annoyed or ‘rude’ because of it.

The better metric would be to conduct large group surveys of multiple different demographics, to which, I’m more than positive you’d get a majority ‘empathetic’ result. Because, not only do large groups of people tend to lean that way, but no culture or race is more inclined to lean towards lacking empathy.

    Fuckin Sinophobes, I swear.

You can measure it. I forget details but i think you look at things like

      • rate of donating blood
      • rate of donating to charity

“We’re more empathetic!” said the white settler, spittle flying from his maskless face into a crowd of people whose only health insurance is GoFundMe.

At this point, 1800s race science is now in the 21st century; lots of academic cranks and pseudo-scientists still peddle a lot of these myths.

They could be talking about cultural effects either.

Like you can rightly say that Londoners have no empathy compared to sheffielders. But you probably couldn’t find a rigorous study on it.

I mean if you live in England and want to say stuff like that go ahead. You probably know your country better than me. These people most likely have never been to China and know nothing of the language and culture and are just citing a shitty study to justify their preconceived bias.

Tbh i think you’re right. They are probably just bigots. But it’s now interesting to keep playing devil’s advocate…

Do you not know some places where the culture is now empathetic then other places? London versus Sheffield us just a very well known example. In general the cultures in different cities have different levels of empathy.

And IMO if the typical Londoner lived in Sheffield for a few years, he would start being more empathetic, and vice versa.

yeah no, don’t play devil’s advocate for racists. It does literally no good, and just wastes everyone’s time.
