Hello and welcome to the fourth monthly edition of the Animemes community discussion thread.
In this thread you may discuss anything (vaguely) related to anime with others!
As always, if you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to leave them here, or send me a private message.
I don’t usually watch anime, but my sister used to like it a lot when we were younger, so now every once in a while we grab some fast food and go watch some anime together.
Awwwh that’s really sweet 😊

How did you do that banner?

Ah nice
I read Akumetsu again and it’s painfully liberal
What’s that
It’s a manga about killing corrupt politicians
Oh good.
But it’s liberal so there’s always a caveat, I take it?
the protagonist kills all high-level corrupt government officials but then expects the non-corrupt prime minister to solve things through reform rather than organizing for revolution
basically “what no theory does to a mfer”
Sounds about right.
Any y’all watch Fire Force?
It looks absolutely stunning and the premise is cool as hell.
It also led me to pretty much writing off shonen anime. The tropes are so abundant and disgusting, like god why. “Japanese nationalists” in the show are represented as having a cooler society, a better way of life, and in being correct in opposing the pseudo-Christian theology of the other Fire Forces. It’s so weird. There’s also a girl in the show where part of her power is she literally has a “lecher magnet” and people accidentally perv on her all the time. Obligatory main-teenage-boy-protag falls on top of her accidentally squeezing her breasts. WHY?
I haven’t watched Demon Slayer much but I’ve seen glimpses of some episodes. The same lecherite tropes and the weird ass rehabilitation of fascist Japanese imagery is so off-putting that even though it’s been recommended to me regularly I’m just gonna pass. JoJo lost me when it rehabilitated literal Nazis in season 2 and also had some pervy stuff played for laughs. Don’t even get me started on SAO. What the fuck is up with this shit? Tokyo Ghoul is cool but falls into similar traps at times.
I’ll just stick with Lain, Perfect Blue, Berserk, NGE, Paranoia Agent etc. I didn’t hate Higurashi When they Cry either. At least when these works deal with sexual topics, especially lecherous ones, it’s dealt with an unflinching seriousness for the most part.
Getting too old to enjoy constantly watching/reading Shounen is a sign of maturity
I saw some bits and it reminded me of Ao no Exorcist, is it the same artist or company?
The manga was made by the main author of Soul Eater (excluding his assistants); don’t know about the studio
Awwwh no I adored soul eater as well, it was one of my first animes 😭
I remember enjoying it years ago (aside from the ending), but I read the manga recently and it was a big disappointment
Yeah the ending was a shambles but the world and music slapped. Psychedelic Souljam and Black Stars theme are still bangers as well as Paper Moon.
Is Lain good? I watched it as a wee lad and I hated it (I just thought it was a confusing mess), but I was also a bit of an idiot at the time. I had similar opinions of the End of Evangelion and Paranoia Agent
Higurashi was very interesting, aside from some sexualization of teenagers (I first watched it as a teenager, so it didn’t bother me back then). Many memorable moments
Aside from the weird nationalist stuff and the completely unnecessary teenage nudity, Fire Force (manga) also went to shit in the last half from a storytelling perspective
Ask me anything
If train A leaves the station going 50 miles an hour, and train B leaves the station one hour later going 70 miles an hour, how many miles will it take for train B to catch up with train A?
I’m reading Lev Vygotsky’s first volume of works.
The Collected Works of L. S. Vygotsky, Volume 1: Problems of General Psychology, Including the Volume Thinking and Speech, edit. by Robert W. Rieber and Aaron S. Carton
My new threads:
I do these so that there’s not too much politics or “serious topics” and instead a bit more light-hearted conversation.
Admittedly, Noam Chomsky has been on a roll lately and I mean that in a good way:
