I actually think they are quite useful, when combined with filters. Even without that though, scanning and scrolling through a lot of content the post tags can help my brain filter and categorise stuff.
Sorta yeah, in that it’s a form that you freely fill out. The thing is that you can also sort by tags, filter them out, etc. It really gives you control of your own experience and is especially good for avoiding triggers and such. Certain community members (rn basically anyone who asks) can also add them so it’s not all the responsibility of the OP.
Honestly I much prefer the design over there, but that’s beside the point :P Complex tagging really helps for allowing you to filter out annoying shit or triggers in a way that warnings and such never can. You can make sure that the things never appear at all, and do it with a lot more precision. For instance, I have drugs and Elon Musk filtered out
It’s not hard to get people tagging. Like I said, over there it’s not just on the OP. Anyone who’s asked for the permissions can do so, and nerds love doing that shit. I’d gladly spend a bunch of time adding tags to other people’s posts like I did over there.
To filter tags, yes. It works really well and if I don’t want to see shit about Elon Musk, I won’t. That’s only really possible with a tagging system.
Also, the nsfw tag already has a system to deal with that. Every tag on Tildes can have tags under it, it’s a hierarchy of tags. So nsfw.nudity would take care of a sexual image while nsfw.death or nsfw.nsfl would take care of a death scene. You can filter out nsfw itself if you don’t want to see any of it, or you can pick and choose depending on what you’re comfortable with. It’s incredibly versatile.
Activity sort is the default for a reason. Comment sort is just an option…don’t touch it unless you want to. I don’t think I’ve ever clicked that in my life lol.
Ofc if you don’t like the themes you don’t like em, but I find that it scales much much better to smaller screens than Lemmy does. That kind of design literally started for tiny CRT resolutions, doesn’t have to be a thing to debate though lol.
IMO they’re pretty useful for big communities, or just communities with lots of topics in general (fandoms?) where it would be a mess if they weren’t categorized. There aren’t many big communities here yet, but if when this place gets big, I think they’re gonna become necessary.
You could also just add it as a part of the title directly (“[Flair] Title”) but I still think flairs are more user friendly. For example flairs could have colors and make the site easier to navigate.
Also new users are less likely to post off-topic content if they see that what they’re about to post has to fall into one of the sub’s categories. They serve as a guide alongside with the sidebar rules.

Personally I’d like to see extensive freeform tagging like Tildes rather than Reddit-style flair, though even that would be better than nothing.
That sounds like a fucking mess to do cross-server though.

Maybe, but then you can just ignore it :P It’s designed so if you don’t care about it or don’t understand it, you don’t have to touch it.

What are reddit post tags?

Oh, you mean flairs!

Anyway I think there’s no harm in adding them.
