Nice, but we still need to find a way to attract people from ***tube

Maybe ***tube will all of a sudden add ads to every video and not pay the creators unless they are registered partners… oh wait, they just did that!

When did that start happening?

I guess the existence of PeerTube is getting known more broadly, and I think what could happen eventually is YT fucking up in some way, that some major content creators that have funding secured through patreon publicly and in an organised fashion set up their own instance(s) or leave for something like TILvids.

Similar happened before when a lot of big names left for blip.tv way back when.

A simple IRC livechat based on KiwiIRC should not be too difficult to add…

That either adds a new dependency for instance admins to worry about (run your own IRC) or reduces decentralization of the network (someone has to run a centralized IRC that most/all Peertube instances connect to).

Not really, KiwiIRC is pure client side javascript. And the livestreamer can just link to their own IRC channel on any server that supports KiwiIRC websocket connections.

Yeah that’s a good point, I hadn’t considered the streamer could set the channel.

They’ve mentioned that this first version of streaming will have no chat or emote features. No mention of whether they plan on bringing them at a later date, but they probably just want to stay laser-focused on getting streaming working as best as possible first.
