After playing Celeste, I got to reading about fantasy consoles. Basically, they are emulators for systems which don’t exist. New games can be written with simulated limitations, allowing for the kind of creativity of older consoles. I am wondering if anyone has used them, and if they have a favorite one?

I’ve never written anything for them but I have played more of this pico-8 game than is sane or healthy

the tic-80 is the one that I’ve thought about doing something for, but…

for Really Stupid Employment-Related Reasons I can’t get too into game dev. though if I were to, I feel like it’d be so much more fun if I could get the game onto a physical console – like one of those retro gaming consoles, or the analogue pocket or the playdate or something

The tic-80 looks pretty cool. And it’s MIT licensed, so I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on that

Follow up question. I’m not a hardware person. How hard would it be to go in the other direction. Make a hardware device that runs like the fantasy console instead of an emulator that runs like the device?

Ah, there’s also this: https://www.clockworkpi.com/gameshell

but it looks very very out of stock :(

I mean if analogue would ever sell me a stupid pocket I think that’s the coolest option just because then you have all of the above: in-browser gameplay for easy distribution, proper hardware to give yourself the whole nostalgic feel, a graphical editor for levels and such…

But I don’t know the real answer.

that is so cool. i will definitely keep my eyes on it. Is it all closed source though?

Nope! well, I should amend that: I have no idea about the tooling for getting stuff into the browser. but the game maker I was thinking of was that one, which is MIT licensed

ah, if you mean the analogue pocket hardware and such, it’s… probably closed source? but at that point it’s sort of just a client implementation for the Game Boy System, which is of course technically closed source but practically…

it seems like there could be such potential for creative stuff out there that probably even already exists and I just don’t know about it--itch.io has tons of bundles of assets for GB style games, so ppl with creative story telling or puzzle ideas have a nice blend of tools and constraints
