How similar is Matrix servers to Discord? I really want an open source version of Discord.
I guess I should just try it out XD.
its kinda similar to discord in text channels but its more focussed around just single rooms, there are communities you can add channels to but its not really like servers on discord
It’s much less centered around segregated collections of multiple channels (Servers). Instead each channel can have its own roles and permissions
Also there are only text channels, audio and video chat are realized with P2P (1:1) or Jitsi (multiple people)
I would really want to see a Mumble client with a better interface actually. Mumble is more like teamspeak if you want.

Having groups of rooms that have shared privileges, and not just rooms would be a killer feature.
There’s a client being worked on that wants to incorporate those sorts of features, also there’s a Matrix Spec Change (MSC) that’s being worked on to make “groups as rooms.” MSC1722. Fairly sure the person working on the client is also involved with that MSC.
Whoa nice, had no idea this existed, Thx.
The problem is the development centralized around just a person and in a personal account.
If the project get more people interested, that person should heavily think on creating a group or organization for it and trying to choose specific people with writing permission who could participate directly on their own.
Most of the people I chat with are using Discord, and they’re not really into tech. Discord is easy for them. I’ve been wanting to set up a Matrix / Element / Jitsi server, but from using Element, I’m not sure how easy it’s going to be get people to switch.
I think the main thing is the structure of single rooms compared to Discord’s channels. I’ll definitely look into the community tab.
I was actually also looking into rocket.chat. That looks a little more what I’m after in terms of interface.
I use XMPP
Underrated comment :) XMPP has advanced a lot in recent years and is in many ways superior to Matrix.
