OwnPhotos was looking good but it hasn’t seen any updates in a year
How about Lychee? It’s looking good and it’s active. Of course it might be quite simple right now, but it’s a fairly new project.

I mean, it could be end-to-end-encrypted. Then you don’t have to trust the hoster.
Of course, though, then the hoster can’t do the tagging for you.
