hi everyone, anyway, i was having heated debates with some users on lemmy and reddit on the subject whether bullying vegetarians actually helps them convert to a vegan diet or deters them from doing so, which would ultimately (un)justify calling them out for their hypocrisy

when i first turned vegan i had many slip ups, with me casually brushing them off as something insignificant, making myself feel better to telling myself that I’m vegan and therefore a good person regardless

that is until i stumbled into a wonderful place called /r/vegancirclejerk, which as you probably know is fully of “militant” vegans that are very opposed to the idea of “baby steps” and constantly bully vegetarians, this helped realize my hypocrisy and played a huge role in me becoming a very strict vegan that also bullies vegetarians and non-strict vegans

and i kind of assumed that this is (was) the case for everyone else, but apparently many people do not think the same

the reason i’m writing this post is to try and collect your anecdotes on whether being bullied on places like /c/vegancirclejerk and /r/vegancircjerk or just “militant” vegans helped you transition to a vegan diet or not, maybe stories of your friends and general thoughts on this

My immediate thought re: bullying into veganism is that broadly speaking, it’s not possible. Bullying is sustained harassment that leverages a power asymmetry to force someone’s attitude or behavior to change but vegans are generally not in power, so there’s nothing that they can do to bully anyone. I suppose the only equivalent would be outrite eco-terrorism but that’s several steps beyond just being a jerk on the Internet.

As for the efficacy, I would probably compare this to other liberation movements and ask if any of them were successfully by being nice. Does anyone have an example?
