please YES stop, get the fuck out of europe please
great news for Europe if the regulators don’t back down
This is a totally hollow threat from facebook. Theyd have to be dragged kicking and screaming out of Europe.
Yeah, there’s no way they’d actually voluntarily pull out from any market.

I mean US did set a precedent here :face with tears of joy:
Most of EU does not align with USA exactly, so there is a silver lining.

They will be, if this is not a scapegoat publicity stunt just like Apple utilised their friend Facebook a while ago for publicising iOS 14’s now delayed privacy measures.
A small step for Europe, a big leap for mankind.
I am most interested in the fallout of WhatsApp as the big messaging app. A new better app can take its place that does not have anything to do with 14 Eyes or NSA.

Signal has similar problems to WhatsApp, as far as contact upload to cloud is concerned. That said, it is not an anonymity based messenger.

Telegram’s system is amazing in this regard. If they had E2EE by default, or if Signal adopts Telegram/Wire system of self assigning a username and hiding phone number away, it would be brilliant.
If Wire had not gotten sold to USA, it would be my favourite messenger app.
now the usa needs to give them the boot
DO IT! DO IT!
Good.
Please don’t back down!

The thing is that their business model is illegal in Europe (GDPR) in general. So they would need to find a different way of making money in Europe if they were to continue operating.

Yeah, I am not sure from this articles what the “data transfer” part means. They say in another article:
Facebook transfers data from its European users to its U.S.-based servers in order to serve those users more targeted ads.
So I understand that this is not about social network data (posts, comments etc.) for which you consent to be published all over the place, but more with the secret tracking/behavioral data that is used for ad tracking and surveillance that they don’t have your consent. If that is the case then the problem is with the way they make money and not with the honeypot product, that is the social network.
But yeah, many US businesses (e.g. Google) will be affected by this as Surveillance Capitalism is the main business model for many of them. And this is the best part :)

Basically FB does the dirty work and allows merchants to keep their hands clean.
Yeah, and they are “too big to fail” so they can do whatever they want. I hope the EU will show that this is not the case.
