I’ve been a GNU/Linux user for about 14 years and have wasted hours (OK, probably days) ricing and customising (you’ve all done the same I think). Laziness has set in, I don’t plan on switching distros anytime soon, I use MX which looks fine. Just wanted to know what you all think: Which distro has an attractive out-of-the-box DE/theme/colour scheme?
Zorin OS looks really good out of the box. It’s the only distro I use with zero modifications.
Elementary os is the prettiest fresh install IMO.
Not my cup of tea but I thought about this after posting. Elementary would probably look very nice to someone new to Linux.
Elementary is like MacOS, but without a lot of the garbage MacOS forces on you. Hardcore Linux users usually don’t like it, but its great for newcomers.
Yeah, its an OS you could set up for your grandparent and they wouldn’t need much instruction.
I get what you mean, but I don’t think, that’s a very high bar for entry. Your grandparents likely just need a way to start the browser and from there on out, the browser UI is the only UI they use.
can we talk about how awful the default color schemes and wallpapers are on almost all distros?
after months of ricing i just gave up and made a hackintosh
Hmm, I’d disagree on the wallpapers. Linux Mint has some pretty beautiful selections - every version has a different selection of nature, architecture, and abstract wallpapers, which I think are on par with the MacOS ones.
debian has some cool backgrounds lately too
I see lots of similarity and uninspired use of the same themes and icons (lots of dark themes, nord, papirus). Like you, I do feel like the wallpapers are junk. There are too many of them most of the time, and they just plop a logo on them. Give me just one of each style: an abstract, a nature, etc. and leave out the logo.
Just a note that ricing has a lot of anti-Japanese / east Asian connotations and its bust to not use it.
The term rice comes from the car community, where it stands for Race Inspired Cosmetic Enhancement. In other words, its a visual change to a car with no functional purpose. The same term and connotation is used in computers to indicate something to do with aesthetics with no practical reason to be there. It isn’t anti-Japanese.
do you mean specifically the term ricing or rice as an object in general?
ricing

I think, Bunsenlabs looks good, if you’re into that sort of minimalistic dark theme: https://www.bunsenlabs.org/img/frontpage-gallery/hydrogen2.jpg
Oh yes. I’ve used that before. And that minimalistic look is what I always tried to get through customization, probably because the first time I saw Linux being used was Slackware 10.2 with a very simple dark theme and I thought it looked great. I think I am a sucker for openbox with tint2. Bunsenlabs is just a dark theme with papirus icons but I like that they throw in a splash of red.
I like Fedora
Gnome 3?
Yeah, it’s blue 😂
Gentoo or Arch, tty is the best
Maybe Zorin. But honestly, they’re all sort of ugly without customisation.
honestly not quite out of the box but i really like openbsd’s fvwm. i always customize the colors and set a background but it’s cool enough out of the box. i like the retro Motif look
There are Arch-based distros designed to be just vanilla arch but with fancy out-of-the-box tiling WM configs like you’d see in /r/unixporn.
I’d say linux mint and/or Manjaro
recently, i am using Mx linux too. ubuntu, previously. in my case, theme is all same because, i am using my own windows manager(based on tinywm) on various linux/unix distros.

I love KDE. I also like the color scheme Pop!_OS uses.
