Short answer? Yes, absolutely. It’s the only real viable alternative to Google Chrome, and it is technically FOSS. Mozilla has made some problematic moves as of late, but Firefox still is by far the best of all the widely-used browsers.

Agreed. And if you’re just asking based on a pure “user experience” standpoint, I think firefox and chrome are very similar. Sometimes one is faster, sometimes the other. The main difference is that I’ve seen chrome run for an hour and eat ALL the memory where firefox doesn’t seem to.

It’s amazing for customizability, no other major browser even comes close. For privacy it’s a bit better than chrome but other browsers like brave probably would do the same, the main reason I love it is that it’s not chromium. I don’t like how powerful google has gotten and how much control they have over the internet and it’s standards.

What I don’t like about Brave is that it takes the worst browser for privacy, Chrome/-ium, and then just superficially patches out the direct Google tracking, and includes an ad blocker and such, which you can easily install via extensions.

Chromium is millions of lines of code, written by a tracking company. Sure, not every individual line of code is awful for privacy, but you still don’t fix even most of what’s buried in there by just patching out a few things.

For example, there’s a web standard for querying your device’s battery percentage. That’s used for tracking, because of course it is. If there’s multiple devices connected from behind a shared public IP, you can usually discern them by their battery percentage.

It’s a web standard, no journalist will shit on you, if you keep this behavior, but it could obviously be done better. And guess which browser changed its implementation after noticing barely any legitimate use-cases and that it’s used for tracking.
Not Chromium, not Brave, it was of course Firefox. Now it only returns rough categories, e.g. 20%, 40%, 60%.

It’s not a huge change, you could patch this into your Chromium fork, but it’s also just one example where you see the difference between doing the necessary to not generate negative press and actually going out of your way to do the right thing.

I actually thought firefox was chromium as well. I’m super glad to hear it’s not.

It’s the only major browser left that’s not out of the KHTML/WebKit/Blink family of browsers.

I think the program uses a Chrome folder for icons. I don’t know why it is there.

it uses userChrome for customization, it was named like a year before google made a browser, because chrome is like something you do to spice something up like a car.

I’ve switched to it a few years ago and really like it overall.

I’ve been using Firefox since 2008 and I’ve never found anything I like better. (Even before I was a FOSShead)

I originally switched to it for ideological reasons, but now I really think it’s a better browser.

It was almost the opposite for me. Firefox helped me realize the power of free software.

Yeah, it’s really good. I think it’s the most ethical option that exists. Never had a problem with a page loading or rendering wrong. I use firefox instead of the official app for quite a few things on mobile. The extension selection is awesome. I have a list of favorites that sync whenever i sign in to a new device, which is often at the moment for me. Haven’t seen an ad in years. Feels good to think that my data isn’t being collected & sold.

What official app on mobile? Is it chrome?

Yes, I meant to say chrome. Bad wording

Pretty good and better than most browsers, but can be better.

I’ve been using it for 15 years and never felt the need to switch browsers. Widely customizable with skins and plugins. Also it stands as the biggest alternative to Chromium-based browsers currently.

In a modern x86 computer? It is.

BUT if you’re using a Raspberry Pi 4 as your main computer as i am, it really is not, not even with Webrender activated.

I’m also using only Firefox preview in Android and is quite good, but i understand that Firefox struggles when using a lot of AJAX, which most mobile versions of a webpage don’t.

Very unfortunate since y hate Chromium but what can i say…

so you probably know this already, but the code in Firefox Preview is now stable (and has been in beta for a while). Stable is now Ffox 80, Beta is 81.

I switched from Preview to Beta, and… probably going to stay there rather than going to Stable.

And yeah desktop Firefox (slightly modified to fit on a mobile screen) is… sluggish on my PinePhone.

I’ve been using Firefox since before it was even known as Firefox (or even Firebird). I use it exclusively due to ethical reasons and the fact that it’s just a great browser.

I like Firefox. But I hate Pocket so I’m using Waterfox instead. However, Chromium-based browser is still faster, I think. Btw, I’m looking for a good browser on mobile phone. Firefox android version(both stable and preview) is too slow compare to firefox. I think Bromite or ungoogled chromium is a good choice.
