Gamedev Coop
13

Hello, over on r/socialistprogrammers there has been a lot of talks of coops lately. Myself and at least one other person have been courting the idea of starting a gamedev coop with socialist ideals. We are still in the planning phase, and if you’d like to be involved, send us an IRC message at irc.yksinotso.org or check out the log at the same address (on port 443 in your web-browser)

EDIT: for reference, coop meaning worker cooperative

Would I be able to join the IRC channel with Element/Riot? How would I do that?

I don’t know. I think element might be just for Matrix, but maybe there’s irc support. If not, irssi is easy to run on linux. I’m using ircII. If you’re on android, fdroid has a few IRC clients.

I’m currently trying to self-educate on programming and game development. I’d be interested in joining once I can say I know enough to do these things.

Feel free to hop in now if you’d like. We are all learning. You can decide how much you want to contribute, but none of us yet has the necessary experience to create a game, or to run a coop. We have reading lists on starting and running a coop, and we’re choosing to develop with godot to make it easier for beginners, and easier to distribute to multiple platforms. For now, we plan to learn and work in our free time, hopefully eventually ending up with something worth publishing.

If you’re interested, here’s a game I’ve coded: https://mylonelydesk.wordpress.com/games/awake/

I should add that we collectively have little experience making games or running a business so far. Anyone who is interested should not expect to immediately quit their day job, but perhaps eventually, depending on how we organize this will lead to something.

I’m a sporadic and periodic hobby (formerly professional) game developer. If I were to ever make games as a vocation again it would be as part of a coop.

I’m based in Sweden. Where would this business be based, and how would international membership work (if at all)?

Hi. We are still figuring it out. the two active “members” currently (myself and 1 other) are both in the easter timezone. I don’t think we have any plans about international membership either for or against so it’s on the table. If you want to be part of it, message us on irc.yksinotso.org where we have a #coop channel or view the logs of the chat on the same url. we have also begun planning some things out on git.yksinotso.org

I like the idea, but it’s not for me. These next questions are purely out of curiosity.

How would such a community be self sufficient? What would be the purpose of having a focus on gamedevs? If someone from the community wanted to join but they weren’t a gamedev, what then? What do you envision the average day is like in this coop?

Hi, from your questions it seems like you are thinking of a commune or something similar, or perhaps a housing coop? A coop in this sense is a worker owned, worker run business. In case you weren’t, it would be self sufficient by creating games which will hopefully be played. we would make a coop focus on gamedev because we’d like to develop games without having our labor stolen by capitalists. if someone wanted to join who wasn’t a game dev, perhaps they could manage financials or marketing. I can’t think of any coop-specific context for the last question.

Ok yeah, I didn’t know the difference. Thanks

A co-op is basically a normal business but instead of shareholders and owners taking all the profit and telling people what to do, profit is either shared or invested back into the community, and there is democratic decision making
