I was going to share too. Thank you.

I used it years ago but now I started a little community with some Latinamerican people.

I would be interested in a community coming from lemmy people there. :3

A Lemmy community on this would be pretty neat.

Please add me: briar://aa42hyp4rtir2xhvnxtqm7rxkug4ky36nh4xouxb4yhj3og2sfpbu

So the ironic thing is these briar links are too long for Lemmy when viewed on a phone. I have to first transfer the lnks from my desktop browser!

Pretty incredible that it syncs via tor as well.

What exactly is a mesh network?

☆ Yσɠƚԋσʂ ☆

It’s a network that’s form ad hoc between the devices that are within range of each other, typically using wifi connectivity. A mesh network doesn’t require cell service or internet access making it resilient to service shutdowns, and providing much better privacy since the data never hits the internet.

How far can the devices be from each other on this app in order for the messages to work?

☆ Yσɠƚԋσʂ ☆

Would be wifi range, but it’s a bit better than that because as long as there is a chain of devices that are all in range of each other the messages can still be routed. For example, if we have three people A, B, and C. As long as A is in range of B and C is also in range of B then A and C can still talk to each other without having to be in direct wifi range.

Oh, that makes sense.

They honestly could give more information on the website. Show me what works and what does not work yet. It looks like a random sideproject, but the (suggested) capabilities are immense.

Not sure what you mean by that, the how it works page links to a detailed manual an a wiki that discusses the technical aspects of the project. What specific information do you think is missing there?

Thanks, I overlooked those. :thumbs up: That’s more than enough to read a little in-depth about the capabilities.

how is it compared to Manyverse?
After using it, I only see downside cause you can’t even transfer images.

after some following up, it creates Tor service for exchanging message when internet is available, seems neat.

How many Briar users are here and how many of them would exchange contact links with me?

The way I set it up with a few friends is by doing it in person and scanning QR codes on our respective phones. I haven’t looked if there’s a different way of doing it. Looks like the main use case would be if you say go to a protest together, then you can all set up contacts before hand and create a trusted mesh network.

There is, the remote link. Both person must exchange them before. Also, try to not use the main F-Droid repo version which is out-to-date. Briar has its own F-Droid repo.

I think the primary use case here is for organizing during protests since it can function without cell access.

Using F-droid, one can easily send the APK to a nearby user. So if only one person has the app installed through F-droid, they could organize to distribute it among a small group, and from there it can continue to spread, assuming the recipients have F-droid already. Otherwise someone could simply transfer a copy of the F-Droid APK to each recipient first.

I don’t think being a general purpose chat platform is the goal here. The main niche for such an app would be something like a protest where there is a crowd of people, and you might not want to be identifiable via the cell network or the network itself could be shut down.
