The instances link at the bottom goes to a list of “blocked instances” and “linked instances”. What I don’t get is what linking means, because it sounds like a whitelisting thing, but if lemmy federation is a whitelisting system, then what would blocking mean, as opposed to just not linking?

Originally got into this because I wanted to interact with content from community.hackliberty.org, couldn’t seem to do so (“404: couldn’t_find_community” when editing the URL to have the same format it does when viewing content from other instances), so I wondered if it was blocked but it isn’t on the blocklist, but also isn’t on the linked list

Linked instances are all those that the viewed instance is federating with. More precisely, its all those instances where we fetched at least one community from.

About community.hackliberty.org, its configured wrong and so federation doesnt work. Can you contact the admin and invite him to the instance admin chat, to help fix the problem?

Thanks for your explanation! I will attempt to contact the admin.

Good question. I would guess if whitelisting is turned on then the linked instances list is important, if blacklisting is on the blocked instances one is used. But that’s just a guess…

@nutomic@lemmy.ml any hints?
