Google glasses. I think when they started to do a lot of testing, it even scared the people wearing them how much information google was storing.

@yogthos
51Y

I actually got to try those once, and the main problem was that the display size was far too small to be useful. I still think the general concept is sound, and I can see a lot of use for having an AR overlay. For example, would be great for navigation where you could project the arrow of where you need to go. If you could make a decent sized virtual display, then the glasses could hook up to your phone in your pocket, and you could have some controller you could use with your hand to do menu navigation and stuff.

@abbenm
21Y

Yeah, I think you’ve nailed it. One pet peeve I keep having with any consideration of future technology is the borderline pathologically delusional short term expectations people have for tech, that lead people to dismiss entire fields if they don’t meet with instant mass consumer success. VR games and augmented reality being the main examples. But people similarly dismissed renewable energy as recently as the 2000s, and people have spent half a century dismissing AI until, at long last, we are kinda beginning to have something to show for it.

But things take time, and some commercial failures nevertheless are based on solid underlying technology.

@yogthos
11Y

Yeah completely agree, we’ll have to wait and see how this develops going forward.

That is the one that I thought was going to change everything. For about a month, I thought the fullest version of the Utopian nightmare was upon us all, and then they just. . . disappeared.

I feel a sense of relief every time i think about it.

I’d love smart glasses but having tried various VR and AR devices I can firmly say that we won’t be seeing any good google glasses anytime soon, though I hope to be proven wrong.

Apple is still supposedly working on AR glasses, but I don’t see how they could be successful.

I think both ITER and CFETR are gonna be completed in this decade, both are really test reactors tho, and then both plan to have actual power generation ones by the 2040s.

  • crypto will become bigger to the point of being viable for casual usage. Especially with so much political instability — decentralized resources have ever increasing value.

  • mock meat - it’s already claiming biggest IPOs in our history and praised non stop. We’ll see more and more of it to the point where it’ll soon be majority of meat market. It’s cheaper to produce and sell than meat - just pure economy.

Future Me

90% of people really just want to eat cheap shit, and plant-based meat will be unstoppable once it reaches the right price. I can’t wait witnessing how people flip their long-held “beliefs” on meat.

Dessalines

Genuinely excited for the mock meat stuff, the stuff I’ve had recently is really good, just a little expensive still. I rarely eat meat hardly ever bc my wife’s a vegetarian, and meat’s too expensive for the most part anyway, but I’ll probably just stop completely when the mocks get cheaper.

@yogthos
31Y

This is looking like it might actually be happening finally.

I imagine it will become a trend/meme to eat it when it comes out which could do wonders for mock meat acception if it is good.

@yogthos
21Y

Oh yeah that’s a good point, hopefully it gets trending and that helps normalize it.

It’s really good! It’s not yet there to match cheap burgers you’d get at a fast food place but in nicer places I’ve always noticed they are priced on par with meat burgers. The frozen paddies at the store are reasonably priced already, I’ve seen some around here for under 3$ and that’s import from Canada - once economy of scales picksup it’ll be really affordable!

I’ve had one for 12$ at a craft restaurant recently and it has been the best burger I have ever eaten so I’m really excited to see more!

Dessalines

Dang that sounds legit, I wanna try.

You’ve actually had mock meat? where did you try it?

Dessalines

Oh I guess you’re talking not about just plant-based meat substitutes, but the synthetically grown stuff. Ya I’ve never had that.

Dessalines
admin
31Y

There’s a bunch of store brand ones, here’s one of the best turkey substitutes I’ve had.

There’s also some things you can do at home, I do vegan buffalo wings and vegan bacon, they’re not too difficult to make.

Maya

honestly i’m kinda depressed about meat alternatives just because they’ve done research and people legit prefer beef blended with mushrooms but i can’t even get people around me to go for that :( ideas about food are just as powerful as reality

Probably carbon nanotubes, lmao.

Electric scooters, electric unicycles and similar vehicles. Just look at this thing and imagine how good these kind of things will be with one or two more years of improvements and price reductions.

The good monowheels are still really expensive (like 2000€), so I’m planning to get an electric scooter first, and some kind of monowheel in a year or two.

Dessalines

21Y

I lived in san francisco for a bit, and every street had like 10 different modes of transportation, but ya I asked a guy how much his monowheel was, it was like $2k USD. Wayyy too expensive for me yet, my motorcycle was ~ $2.3k USD. Those electric scooters look legit tho, really cheap and really good accelleration.

@nutomic

I just wish my city had less mountains, these scooters get really slow if its too steep.

The foot scooters and unicycles are pretty much just a meme outside from few special urban environments.
What’s actually cool and already somewhat available are electric scooter (the motorcycle bikes). For example I love these Taiwanese Gogoro scooters as well as Yamaha and Honda working on releasing electric versions of their most famous motorcycle lines (like Honda PCX) next year.

This will undoubtedly be the biggest urban environment change of the past few decades. Even the newest modern scooters are quite loud — getting rid of all of that noise would be a complete urban landscape changer!
e.g. take a look at this traffic and imagine majority of vehicles being clean and silent!

I’ve been waiting for this starting to roll out here in Thailand but seems like Covid really set back a lot of consumer industry around here. Might take just few more years.

Maya

okay so they seem faddish you are right BUT there is one electric unicycle called the mten3 and it’s small enough to fit in a backpack. it still has 800w and decent range so this is kind of a game changer for someone like me who refuses to learn to drive. except I can’t balance either lmao

@yogthos

There is this. Doesn’t fit in a backpack, but it’s pretty impressive.

Oh they are quite cool and fun no doubt but I’d argue they will not be a “next big thing” outside from small niches however electric motorcycles most certainly will as it’s just a matter of time.
They use the same infrastructure and the range for a motorcycle isn’t as important as it is for a car so there are no real draw backs compared to gasoline.

I actually think electric cargo bikes have much greater potential than foot scooter and unicycles except they are still mad expensive and kinda under the radar — a single big manufacturer could make cargo bikes huge. You should definitely check it out if you don’t want a car but want a healthy, safe and fun commute lifestyle!

Maya

I had an electric assist bike before. it was good, but parking and securing it was stressful anywhere but a few normal places. eventually it was stolen. similarly I like the idea of electric motorcycles but where I am, you have to get a driver’s license before you can get a motorcycle endorsement, and that’s not happening. 😅

I think electric bicycles replacing motorcycles will be great for reducing overall pollution in countries where motorcycles are king, like in South East Asia. Electric scooters on the other hand seem like a fad to me, I feel like it’s a more expensive version of a regular bicycle, it’s that cities need to make their roads more bike-friendly.

@nutomic

One advantage of the electric scooter is that its much easier to take on a bus or train.

Long range wireless magnetic resonance charging. This talk came out in 2009, and nothing much happened since.

Dessalines
admin
31Y

Its just not worth it IMO, information transmission requires very little energy so the 1/r^2 dropoff is fine, but power transmission would basically be either massive induction or just microwave cooking people. A better solution is just distributed power generation via solar / wind, etc, but energy storage and batteries are the bottleneck there, they’re really expensive and not good for the environment.

@yogthos
31Y

Oh I didn’t mean long rang as in powerlines, just within a room for as the guy shows in the talk I link. The idea is you can put a coil in the wall and then any devices in the room can be powered wirelessly by it. So, kind of similar to the way current wireless chargers work, but without the device having to be right next to the charger.

Virtual reality has always been this in my lifetime.

Source: 29 years old, have been interested in virtual reality since childhood. Got real hyped up about VRML, X3D, Project Wonderland and the likes. The ghost of Project Wonderland is still kicking around as “Open Wonderland” and someone vandalized that article over a year ago to change the preview release date to “May 2030”… as of this comment it has not been fixed

Society and life changing, probably VR and AR. Autonomous driving will also have a big impact, but not nearly as much.

Just briefly, what is meant by end of history? I have often seen it in the context of capitalist realism, especially after its exacerbation with the fall of USSR and the emergence of USA and allies as the singular pole of power in the world economy.

seems like a reference to Francis Fukuyama type end of history? which really would mean political liberalism, not, like, progressivism.

Liberals believed Fukuyama when they proclaimed the end of history when the USSR was in it’s final days and the Berlin wall was taken down.

What are you even on about lol. How is something from the 90s even relevant to this thread? You’re just trying to inject your political bullshit into every single thread. Go to a commie meetup or something — this is tiring.

@abbenm

You seem like you have absolutely no idea what the Francis Fukuyama thing was about, and are interpreting through the lense of internet politics from the last 2 or 3 years. But Fukuyama was making a broad argument about the trajectory of western liberal institutions that he believed would span from the 90s through basically all eternity. And it’s a solid encapsulation of neoliberal establishment thinking that is still very mainstream today (despite in many ways having been repudiated by recent events).

Also, what’s the deal with immediately veering from calling them an alt right troll in one comment to telling them to go to a communist meetup in the next comment?
