I read about the Vapcap, and I was instantly hooked because of the simplicity, the resulting durability and the fact that there are no batteries in there that can go bad rendering the device non-functional.

I bought the M 2017 and had problems with the draw. I took a look at the device and saw that the upper region of the tip, the circular hole on top, was flat when looking from the side. If you put the cap all the way down, the flat surface of the cap pretty much seals the hole - resulting in rather bad draw. I thought this is a production error of some kind. But I could easily fix that by putting the cap all the way down, and then pull it back one tiny bit, so that there is room for the air to flow. I didn’t want to send back a device that is functioning well for me, and this error doesn’t impact the benefits I laid out above.

After some time, I saw that a new version of the M was released. The 2018 version. It looks a bit different, but the important part is again the tip and the cap. The cap is 100% the same. The tip now has a double groove, for different/better airflow… but, there it is again: There are no notches on the top circular hole, resulting in the same problem as the 2017. That means that this is not a production error. This is actually the design of the thing. Okay. That’s pretty weird. That’s an incredibly big flaw, and it even made it into the next version of the product? It’s just a small company. How could this happen?

Then comes the 2019. It finally has grooves. The tip look different again. The design seems to be shuffled around quite a bit. Now the grooves of the tip are shaped like a lightning, and where they lead to the top circular hole, there are finally notches - as it is supposed to be. All the other changes seem kinda random, but at least they fixed this big flaw.

Then comes the 2020. Random changes overall. The whole thing looks different everywhere. Now there are even more notches on top of the circular hole of the tip.

But… and that is honestly really odd… they are not needed anymore. Why? Because the tip isn’t round anymore, but shaped like a polygon with 12 sides. The cap isn’t surrounding the circular shape anymore. It rests on the edges of the 12 sides. Doesn’t that mean that heat transfer from the cap to the tip is completely different?

…and that’s just one of the questions I have. The Vapcap M is an incredibly well made design. The idea is really something different. Very simple, but very effective and durable.

This is really odd to me. The principle is a really awesome idea and seems to me to be the result of many years of testing and designing, done by people who know what they do.

But how does it come that the design had such a big flaw, and an incredibly obvious one on top, and why are the iterations over the years all over the place?
