Firebase is used for Google Cloud Messaging. The only way to reliably receive push notifications on Android.

Signal is using web-sockets for push notifications since years, and the Tutanota app made it into F-droid because Tutanota managed to degoogle. Why can Mozilla not learn from that and implement it ?

Signal is a terrible example for this, as they rejected community implementations for this for years.
And I doubt Mozilla would reject a fallback implementation with Websocket, if the community provided it. They just don’t see it as the highest priority to implement themselves.

And rightfully so, I would say. It’s a browser after all, not a messenger or mail client. Receiving push notifications from your browser is at best a nice to have.
