much thanks to @gary_host_laptop for the logo design :)
I think this was the right choice. Being able to communicate with people without sharing your phone number is much better and safer than the worry of having encrypted contacts on a cloud imo. Would be best if you had the option to stay local completely but I understand it’s practicality.

I just got everyone on signal :/
its still the best option since all the other messages do the same thing except without encryption. Also, what is it about this that worries you?
Now that I am reading about it more, I am less concerned and perhaps a bit excited. The feature fits well into my privacy / convince trade off space.
Yeah man I feel the same. I had to convince people to switch to Signal and I’m sure people won’t humor another switch. Looking back I think I would have waited longer to decide on an alternative to WhatsApp.
The article does say that they will make contact backup (and PINs) optional, but It is well documented that the creators of Signal have a weird relationship with the Open Source community.
Maybe. Or Silence…or Session…or Molly. How does Signal work on a tablet, have you ever tried?
Signal has gotten a lot better on the ipad : https://signal.org/blog/signal-for-ipad/ It use to be bad.

I made a Lemmy account to confirm that I always complain about the lack of those features. :thumbs up:
I’ll have to decide if this matters to me, but are there any good Signal alternatives or forks?

https://github.com/LibreSignal/LibreSignal/issues/37#issuecomment-217211165 I don’t think so. Meanwhile just use XMPP (I recommend using this instance: https://calyxinstitute.org/projects/digital-services/xmpp) or Riot (aka Matrix)
good alternatives: xmpp and riot/matrix.
