Wait, there are people who disable JS everywhere? Doesn’t that break like 90% of the websites you visit?

I use uMatrix and it starts out by very strictly blocking stuff for a site. I’d say it doesn’t quite break 90% of sites. Maybe 70%-80%, which is still a lot.

In most cases where the site is not obviously shit, I’m lazy and I just ‘allow’ everything in uMatrix and reload. I’m okay with that.

If I find myself visiting a site more regularly, I either permanently whitelist it, or, if I’m not lazy or particularly distrustful of said site, I’ll progressively ‘allow’ more and more.

What I like about this approach is that it’s a minor inconvenience, but it keeps me aware of how most sites do need to load various external scripts to function, but thankfully also how many of them do fine without first asking me to share my visit with dozens of tracking/ad sites.

There really does seem to be a clear distinction between ‘some tracking/external js’ and ‘holy shit popups and tracking and taboola and other bullshit everywhere’. The latter I usually end up blocking entirely.

Yes (https://noscript.net/) and no, more like 70% :D

Ah, okay. I use uMatrix to disable scripts, but only a few websites managed to work without JS.

I’m curious, what would the other 30% be? Do you have any examples? I love me some JS-less websites (still love you, Lemmy!), they’re usually so snappy.

If you go to Twitter with NoScript blocking all JS it suggest to use legacy version under: https://mobile.twitter.com/. Also DuckDuckGo has no JS version: https://html.duckduckgo.com/html. Many blogs are readable without JS e.g. https://jpastuszek.net/asn/ uses no JS. SourceHut (https://sr.ht/) uses no JS (only for payment with Stripe). The point of NoScript is that you can enable JS only for those domains that you want (e.g. keep it blocked for ads/tracking domains).

Very nice, thanks!

Are you familiar with uMatrix? and if so, what made you pick noscript?

I am not familiar with uMatrix. I use uBlock Origin + Noscript. I will check it out at some stage…

Use uMatrix. Disable all javascript by default. Enable some javascript for domains you trust.
