They’ve been pm’ing us, we’ll help them get an instance set up in any way we can.
You love to see it.
My body is ready for the inevitable hug of death :D
please do, there’s 140,000 lost souls out there, lost in the wilderness…

The ban of CTH is my final straw with reddit. The fucking Biden/Obama posting combined with the neoliberal/conservative assholes that are everpresent in every thread. I’ve been needing a new resting place.
Nice! Definitely tell them to get in touch with us so we can help them.
For those who (reasonably) don’t feel like using Discord, I’m just going to state for the record that the Discord instance that was spun up for the community migration two days ago currently has 8,300 users. A few minutes ago one of the voice channels broke out into a chorus of The Internationale.
I’d rather not use discord tbh. Pretty sure I deleted my account as well.
Why don’t people like Discord?
First of all, it is proprietary. Second, the client has deep access to the operating system in order to implement its screen capture and overlay functions, which poses security concerns. Third, it is centralized and a warrant can be issued to Discord to scrape user data and messages without the server’s “owner” being informed. Fourth, it does not provide encrypted messaging functionality. Fifth, it is a bulky Election app.
Sixth, they blatantly say in their ToS they might sell all your data to advertisers and third parties
Good rule of thumb: if it’s backed with VC (Venture Capitalist) money, it’s guaranteed to fuck you over some time in the future.
As far as the client issues, I wholeheartedly agree. That said, it is possible to use Discord via Pidgin, which gets rid of the bulkyness and of some of the privacy issues.
I mostly use it for chatting with friends. Is there a good alternative for that?
Any Matrix rooms(?) you recommend?
I am of the opinion that the discord app is actually one of the better electron apps.
You got any more of those invite links?
is this place not a ‘lemmy instance’?
Hey, just in case anyone else is wondering:
The way federated software works is that you can have multiple “instances”, that is, servers, that all run Lemmy software. They can each have their own communities. Once federation is turned on (it’s in development) then those instances can talk to each other and share posts across to each other. Why would you want to do it this way instead of centralizing? Well, that way if the people who run instance A take Dr. Jekyll’s serum and turn into spam-happy assholes, the other instances can stop pulling posts from A and sending posts to A. On the other hand, if you don’t like moderators on instance B telling you to stop posting Wallace and Gromit gifs on everything, you can find a pro-Wallace-and-Gromit-gif instance and not worry about it.
If you haven’t used this kind of software before I recommend reading about Mastodon, which has that federation model.
When reddit banhammers your r/cheeseporn
This is the dev site
This is actually kind of huge, because from here word of mouth and overall discussion of the platform will be insane if this happens.
Oh yeah this place is amazing
Hell yeah I am ready to post baby
am I a lib for not knowing the discord was a thing before it was too late?
Yes, this is exactly what I wanted to happen! That’s a huge win for /r/CTH and decentralization.
Haha, much as I’ll miss my fancy reddit phone app, I was honestly hoping for this to happen too. Couldn’t imagine the various good reddit communities to migrate to a better place unless they were forced to.
I’m going to build my own Lemmy client though, mobile-first and everything. The API seems okay enough, even if it’ll probably change from under me a bunch.
sounds good, has it happened yet? discord no pasaran
I feel decentralization coming
Wouldn’t it be better to join communism.lemmy.ml and help that instance grow? Although, I suppose that with federation it’s a moot point going forward. :)
I’m guessing they want, like the donas, to have their own instance so “the man can’t shut us down!”
They’re apparently going to call it “ChapoTrapHouse” again, which is facepalm because 1) they were never about the podcast after a while [despite sticking the episodes up they weren’t the popular content on the sub] and 2) the podcast hosts hated their antics and being named after them [and the sub hated the podcast hosts in return]
Honestly, I wish they’d make a clean-break and just name themselves something else, but apparently their Discord folks seem keen to continue the CTH name as a “fuck you” to the podcast hosts and “because it’ll be easier for the scattered redditors to find.”
While I’d prefer something not encumbered by CTH (not that there’s anything /wrong/ with that), I do think it’s a decent argument that something still somewhat related would make it easier to find.
Wouldn’t know what though. maybe just cth.something(.something?).
Either way, anything’s better than the current nothing. This instance is a bit slow so having a separate instance of Lemmy would be a great start.
CTH is full of liberals though. It’ll break their hearts.
It’s an opportunity to educate them. :)
What kind of place is this, What’s a lemmy?
A tasty voice in the darkness. Yow!
