the extent to which much of this has been completely self-inflicted is what makes it stand out to me. sri lanka hasn’t been doing great the past few years, but it got so much worse when the government tried to go all-organic and banned fertilizers, which turned sri lanka’s food self-sufficiency into a huge food deficit worth hundreds of millions in imports while also singlehandedly knocking out areas of their economy that produce hundreds of millions of dollars
