If you want to use spaced repetition for studying openings, Listudy.org is the site for you :)

I created this because I like spaced repetition for learning, I have been using anki for studying for exams since years and I wanted to use the same concepts for learning chess. You can find openings to study here or create an account and upload your own studies.

I always appreciate feedback so if you have any please let me know!

It’s really cool! My impression though is that it’s mostly to help with memorization. I would like it to help me understand why those moves are best. Is there any book or database you could pull explanations from maybe?

I dont think automatic explanations are easily possible. PGN files (the basis of studies) allow for comments in them, which I display in the initial phase. Thats currently the only way to support explanations for moves on the site. Unfortunately you have to come up with those explanations for yourself if you dont use a study of somebody else.
