You could read up on webtorrent, like other torrent clients it has to expose your IP-adress to work.
I mean, yeah, he’s not wrong, but IP address is one of the lesser significant data points that regards privacy. It’s absurd to argue that it’s worse for privacy than YouTube…
yeah I’d suspect the international data mining ad agency hosting a video platform that hemorrhages money to have some reason to keep it going other than the goodness of their hearts. It’s not trustworthy and basically anything would be better.
I disagree.
This is one of the core reasons for activists to not use peertube, as the attack surface is bigger. When a popular activist video is posted on peertube, cops and nazis can also watch this video on peertube and they will have the activists IP adress.
sure, but I don’t imagine most people using Mastodon are activists… moreover, if you happen to be an activist, you might as well be using Tor to for every interaction with social media…
It is still not obvious that watching a peertube video causes your IP address to be leaked. Sure, there’s a little warning, but no choice. Additionally, you see the warning after the video has started, where packages might already have been exchanged.
So for activists, the desired workflow is to choose when to leak their IP address and when not, even without using tor all the time. Because, for instance, videos over tor can be considered unethical, since it takes up a lot of traffic, which activists might want to avoid.
Additionally: as the activists (for instance the hambibleibt people who told me that) might fight for things you like or desire, you might want to include their perspective more when thinking about software.
Like, it doesn’t matter what “most people” want. Most people are not blind or deaf or otherwise disabled - but it still makes a lot of sense to think about their needs when thinking about software. So i don’t think it is good to focus on what most people want.^^
So this is the reason for activists to still use youtube, because they know that only youtube has their ip address
To be honest, I don’t really trust Peertube, considering its bad moderation (see https://lemmy.ml/post/32526 ) but as I said before Youtube could be easily replaced with a hosted video in joinmastodon. No youtube needed.
However, Gargron was never a Free Software guy, probably chose that license because it was convenient. So probably @resynth1943 's and Gargron priorities are pretty different.
He’s the leader of the project, so he has the last word at the end. If you think a project with different priorities is going to mirror yours because you made a new issue, you are going to be dissapointed.

This. That video could be hosted in joinmastodon itself. No problems.

He recieves $6,051 USD per month, he is going to be fine haha
I see, that must be the reason why he didn’t close registrations on mastodon.social a long time ago, and have the flagship flooded with 1/2 million users :)
I’m not sure what are you trying to say? Are you annoyed about centralization? (understandable) About that, mastodon.social closed registrations and Gargron made another instance mastodon.online that he also admins. Lo mismo pero no igual.
Yes, I was indeed annoyed about the unneeded centralization on the flagship that Gargron did. Good to hear that he closed registration finally! Apart from that I am very grateful for what he has done for promoting open source based Federation!
There are >0.5 millions users on Mastodon?!
https://mastodon.social/@usercount 500k+ for Mastodon.social. And for more instances it looks like almost 4M. https://the-federation.info
Just in Mastodon.social :))

Mastodon instances link to joinmastodon.org, and the last one has a Youtube video linked on its main page (in how it works). I hope you understand better now ^^
