I had the idea of running my own Lemmy instance to help testing for federation (Which is up and running, with a dot nl domain name), but looking some more at the documentation it looks like the testing structure for Lemmy is already fine. Meanwhile I wondered whether there is interest in a Dutch language based Lemmy instance. This would focus on Dutch, Flemish and South African speakers.

It’s up and running \o/ : https://lemmypraat.nl/ The domain name is very fresh and might not have reached all DNS-servers world wide. If it won’t load for you, you can try again later.

I hope your instance is successful!

Thanks ! Apart from myself there are two other users. Getting 8 more users and more content will be a milestone :)

I would join but I don’t know Dutch :c

You could try posting something in the thenetherlands subreddit and discord group to reach your milestone.

Thanks. Maybe I’ll post something on Mastodon, or reach out to some people. I like to keep it small and cozy for now (I’m not using reddit and discord).

Nice to see up-votes and comments. I’ve just registered a new dot nl (they’re on discount) domain name, and will follow up on this later on.

Exciting times !

Top idee in ieder geval!

Messaging works. Now find out whether the language can be set site wide ?

Why not a community on this lemmy.ml?

Because federation is a future feature, and with its own server, on the dot NL server everything can be Dutch, Flemish, South African spoken. On that foundation the new users will be free to create their own specific communities. Also, the history of Mastodon has shown - imho - that keeping very tight to its flagship is a bad idea.

Good point. I was thinking that the splintering to smaller communities might lead to slow death… Let us know when you got the .nl instance set up!

lemmy.ml doesn’t have federation enabled, so no. Federation works via activitypub

are there plans to enable federation on lemmy.ml? wondering if i should start using a federated node instead for fear of getting left out of the fediverse!

Some more on federation here : https://lemmy.ml/post/35293 My personal stance is that everything starts from zero. lemmy.ml once started with zero users, and now > 2000. the dutch lemmypraat.nl has currently only two other users except for myself and the admin. And one of the other users is running the german https://asoziales.net/ where currently also are very few users. It is possible that people worry, and only want to create one account on one server. However, having more accounts can be fine. On Mastodon I always had more than one account. Handy, when an instance is down unexpectedly and you still want to share a web-link or read up some news.

Federation is work in progress. Not sure if it is possible and how.
