This is getting pretty exciting the more features we add. We just added federated user icons, post thumbnails, and embeds!

In the far future, we do plan on implementing user following (which is the basis of most of the current fediverse), and if those clients end up supporting communities in some way, you would. But first we’re getting lemmy federating with other lemmys first, then following federated users after.

There are sort of communities in Friendica and Hubzilla, that’s the closest I know that already exists. Haven’t heard of any Mastodon plans for group discussions.

Can’t remember if private communities already implemented in Lemmy, but what’s the plan on how to federate those? Can remote users be invited to a private community in another instance? If so, have any ideas on privacy been discussed ensuring proper encryption or so when propagating such communities across servers?

We dont have private communities, and it will be a long time before we implement that. We will think about the details when we get there, but generally ActivityPub only uses TLS to encrypt connections, there is no end to end encryption.

I’ve heard there’s something being done regarding that by the Mastodon folks.
